I understand your point of view.
Before buying a laptop, one should realize what they're investing into, which is what the OP is doing and congrats to him since he is doing his proper research.
I am going into programming and I believe my college does have rooms with outlets for students. I wanted a powerful punch and something I can still enjoy my games comfortably. It was a present, so honestly I cannot put the same value on this laptop as you did on yours since you bought it with your very own money.
However I believe that laptops are very fun to have and I can't tell you the countless times where I wish I had a laptop instead of having to lug my HAF 922 to my friends house an hour away, and then came the challenge of finding a proper desk to fit my needs at his house. With a laptop, I can enjoy Dirt 3 while laying in bed as I did this morning on a beautiful Memorial Day
It really depends on the laptop you get. For me, the G73 is plenty for at LEAST a year. Hell my C2D desktop lasted me 4 with minimal upgrades (RAM and HDD). Here I have 4 cores with 2 threads, and RAM expandable up to 16GB.Of course, the GPU will become outdated, but at the same time I still have my desktop.
