HDD issue -- Need help

Hey guys,

So, I thought the backplanes in my Corsair 800D were faulty as sometimes one of my HD's would be picked up and then after a restart or a system shut down etc, it wouldn't show in bios and couldn't boot. Most of the time, another restart would fix this problem.

However, today, I can not get my main hard drive to boot up. It's not detectable in bios and the funny thing is, I can't really get into bios if the hard drive is connected to it... it basically locks up.

I went to the store and got another Hard drive to double check and the new HD that I got works just fine, my back up drive is showing just fine as well.

What can I do to get my data transfered or run any commands on the old hard drive to determine if it's just dead?

Also, the error I get is "Sata 3 hard disk error" or what ever 'sata' slot that it's plugged into as I've tried multiple slots. Master, sata 1-6 etc etc.

Thank you in advance

Hi, i'm not really a pro at this stuff, but these commands helped my sons HDD a while ago when he was getting BSOD issues.
Note: C: is the OS HDD & the HDD you want to check would be differnt.
1.Run "Command Prompt" as "Administrator"
2.Type: CHKDSK C: /F /R
3.Type: Y for Yes & Restart the Computer.

you could also try to add /X
/X = Fix file system errors on the disk, dismounts the volume first, closing all open file handles.
/F = Automatically Fix file system errors on the disk.
/R = Scan for and attempt Recovery of bad sectors.

Exit codes:
0 No errors were found.
1 Errors were found and fixed.
2 Could not check the disk, did not or could not fix errors.

Thanks for the reply but my main issue is getting the drive detected. When it works it works just fine. I dont get slow downs or lock ups nor blue screens. Just the drive wont be detected. Tried all my hot swap bays and all my sata ports to no avail. Both of my other drives are detected just fine

Have you tried replacing the sata cables themselves, they do go bad.

Yes. And I used the same sata on another drive and was picked up.

You should check your bios, there has to be an option like ACHI-IDE,make sure this options is set to IDE.
Another thing that you can do is powering off your pc switch the 0-1 button to 0 from your PSU and get the battery out from the mobo and let it like for 5 min.
Never ever change the sata cable of your main windows HDD into another sata port on the mobo because you will not be able to boot into windows.
Try to disconnect all your HDD's and plug just the one that you have problems with see what happens.

If it's hanging on BIOS there's really not much you can do. The hanging is a result of a timeout while waiting for the device to respond, which it isn't.

You may be able to get a replacement PCB of that exact same hard drive to replace, but it is admittedly a long shot.
