[W7N] Microsoft Releases Stand-alone System Sweeper Beta - Page 4

One of the tricks I use to avoid some issues, on a booting system that is heavialy infected, is to use Safe Mode (Press F8 repeatedly at start-up after turning on the comtpuer). I use Malwarebytes' & Spybot Search & Destroy, which can be installed & updated from Safe Mode (With Networking) & they have fixed thousands of heavily infected PCs for me.

What Safe Mode does is, it loads only the necessary drivers & software & services required to run your operating system, though sometimes the malware is so bad that it even works in safe mode, which is not good.

A tool like this could be a valuable weapon in an array of tools that many techs already have, good job Microsoft, though I have to add, ABOUT TIME!

REVIEW:

This is a rather nice boot CD/DVD/USB program, basically it's running Windows PE, boots into a shell of Windows 7, which is only functional for the software it load, which is something like Windows Defender & Microsoft Security Essentials rolled up into one.

The scanner can however take quite a long time, especially if the computer you are scanning has over 50 GB of data, possibly a few hours, though if it's a well organized system that doesn't have a lot of data on the drive, then it should not take a long time to do the scan, maybe 20 minutes to an hour, depending upon how much data you are scanning. (It appears to be able to scan 10-20 files a second, though, many computers have well over 300,000 ++ Files)

Updated: This seems to be a quite good scanner removing viruses, malware, spyware, and root kits (the nastiest of all), though it doesn't catch everything, it should catch enough to get the system back up and running again, though further testing is needed to see just how effective this program is, so far I'm impressed.

That's my 2 cents anyway..

I just tested this program on an infected system it actually found & removed all but 4 problem, Malwarebytes' Caught 3 it did not, and Spybot caught 1 problem it didn't.

Nevertheless, on a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give this a 8.5 definitely, but this is beta!

So we may soon see the best solution for fixing a PC, though I need to test it on an unbootable PC to see if it can bring it back to life or not..
