What AMD CPU won't bottleneck two 6970s?

A friend of mine was wondering. He has an h70 so I was thinking 4GHz should be doable. He wants to OC the 6970s to 950 or 1GHz.

I'd say a nice OC on a x4 will do nice. If he has some money to spend I'd go for the x6 1100T

1100T is a waste of money. It's exactly the same as a 1090T only with the default clock set 100MHz higher and the price bumped up.

A 1090T will achieve the same overclock as an 1100T

To add the 1090T is way cheaper than a 1100T

At least here in Canada

All amd's will bottle neck xfire 6970s. The fastest one would probably be an OC'd 1090t with 2 cores disabled (for potentially higher clocks, bears testing before deciding - 100-200 mhz not worth 2 cores though) or wait for BD and hope they pull it off.
AMD, I give up.

So you think a 955BE at like 4GHz or so won't bottleneck him, least not enough?

Yeah, I'd never go for a 1100t or 980.

That's not the question at hand. Post facts and keep your opinion outa here

.
I think any AMD quad @ 4ghz should be fine. The main thing to be aware of is that if you post back here with "My cards get poor fps in games" the answer will be bottleneck. However it's been show that different games on a certain CCC version will perform different.

My 1090t went to 4100 Mhz no problem with an H50.

If I were buying today I'd get the 1100t as they are better binned and only a few dollars more. You might get a few more Mhz outta an 1100t.

I avg 150 fps at 1080p in most games, BFBC2, Dirt3, etc.

If that's a bottleneck, i can live with it. ;-)

I agree with your thinking of 4GHz.

I propose using an AMD Phenom II X4 955 (or 965) BE overclocked from 3.2GHz to 4GHz (~25% OC) to pair with an oc'ed HD6970 CF at 1920x1080.

I have done an analysis suggesting that a stock Phenom II X4 965 can match well with a pair of GTX580s at 1920x1080, with CPU bottlenecking for some games. Read my post #56 below for the detailed analysis.

Here:http://www.overclock.net/nvidia/9533...x-580-a-6.html

To overcome that CPU bottlenecking, I suggest an overclocking of ~25%.
