My new quiet airflow (warning - graphics)

Thread Starter
Previously my airflow looked like this:

Beta_Evo_Schemo_-_2c.png

I didn't think that was too elegant. For one thing, my top intake's rpm and output was fixed - As.s boards have no Voltage regulation of fans - which meant that the noise was always maxed out. Another thing was those two 80mm fans. True, I had them at 5 Volts but they were not quiet. Though the case wasn't noisy, you could hear it. Finally, that bottom intake might be interfering with the airflow across the HD's and over the gpu.

The reason I had 80mm fans in the top front position was that my DVD drive was in the third 5.25 slot. I originally put my IO unit under the DVD drive so that my headphone wire would not droop over the front of the DVD drive:

Hotrod_Take_2_Front_cover_open.png

I decided that I don't use the DVD drive often enough for that to matter, so I swapped the IO unit with the DVD drive, which freed up a slot, since the IO unit is only about a third the depth of the DVD drive. So I put in a 120mm fan - an AeroCool Shark 12cm downvolted to 5v:

Beta_Evo_quiet_rig_2011-05-30_004v.png

BTW - that's a Gentle Typhoon 800 rpm AP-12 in front. It pushes only 28 cfm, but it makes only 9 dB noise. Also, with its relatively strong static pressure it can easily pull air through that front dust filter.

I removed the bottom intake fan and replaced it with a piece of stiff plastic from a pack I bought at a hobby store. Then I replaced my top intake fan with a TY-140, which is a PWM fan. A also replaced my Slip Stream and TY-140 on the Mugen 2 with two San Ace 9S1212P4M011 Silent Series PWM fans. (That's a taobao link. Have you ever seen so many specs and high quality pictures?) I like the San Ace Silent fans. The M's were the one speed that was missing from my collection. Then I got the opportunity to buy some, but only buying eight made sense; so i bought the last eight the distributor had.

So, at max the San Aces push 58.6 cfm at 24 dB - very quiet. At minimum they push 24.8 cfm at 10 dB - essentially silent. I have confirmed those noise levels.

The TY-140 pushes 28.3 to 74 cfm at 17 to 21 dBA, so it is noisier in idle but not quite so loud on load. That's an OK compromise, since 17 dB is still pretty quiet.

I connected them all to an Akasa PWM Splitter. I put its control plug into the CPU fan header, and hooked its 12v connector to a Molex coming from my PSU. So all three fans rise and fall with demand, and when the system is at idle it is very quiet. Mostly it's just the sound of air moving.

Here's how it looks:

Beta_Evo_quiet_rig_2011-05-30_005.png

Here you can see the mid-case fan and the upper front intake fan:

Beta_Evo_quiet_rig_2011-05-30_006.png

The mid-case fan is an AeroCool Shark 14cm pushing 50 cfm at 14.5 dB on its 7v adapter. It's held in place with a single zip tie. TBH, I picked these fans because of their LED's and because they don't click when undervolted. I wanted to use my Yate Loon D12SL-124B LED fan, but it made more noise at 12v and clicked when undervolted.

Here's the new diagram:

Beta_Evo_Quiet_Rig_02.png

The side intake fan is a 500 rpm Kaze Maru.

The results? I just ran a 30-minute OCCT/Linpack stress test. I have Real Temp managing my Turbo Boost, which can go from 9 to 30x. My i7 875k has a BCLK of 133, so the load clock should be 4GHz. It's actually 4012MHz, which is close enough. The Vcore is normal + 0.03125v, and it ran at a plateau of 1.36v with frequent excursions to 1.344v and 1.352v. Ambient was 25c. The average plateau temp of the hottest core was 80.25c, so I got about a 55c TOA. Considering this chip's results with other heatsinks, it's about right.

So: I got a system that supports its max OC very quietly. I'm satisfied.

You may ask where my D14 is? It's in the basement getting ready to resume testing: I'm about done with my Firefox theme updates.

BTW - you can see more pics of this rig on my gallery at OCN. They were all posted on 2011-05-30. Of course, there are 569 pics there ATM . . .

Nice setup ehume. I've been busy buying up mech keyboards and haven't spent quality time with the fans I have. lol Also been trying to get that 5400 RPM PWM GT from Japan but because of that recent typhoon they had, all their logistics are down. Oh well, guess I'll just have to wait. tongue.gif

I've been thinking about adding another fan in the middle similar to your new setup using zip ties but haven't had time to open up my rig yet and when I downsize my backup rig to a mid-tower, I will probably remove its rear fan grill also.

Nice. I will have to do some wire managment in my case and hopefully get some better airflow...

Nice ehume, I should really consider adding a center fan for the GPU's and removing some of the back PCI slot covers like you. I'm seemingly trying to form a tornado with my current setup, atleast down near the gpu and psu.

Very nice! But I'm curious how did you get your mid-case fans secured? Does your case support that or did you use some jury-rigging?

He said he used a zip tie, I'm going to try the same thing next time I open my case up. Have the stock fan's that came with the Noctua begging for work.

Yup. A single 8-inch ziptie. What pleased me was being able to fit a 140mm fan in there. Do note that I have a 140mm finger guard on the intake side so the fan can lie against the SATA cables coming from the SSD and the DVD. The 140mm finger guard came with a Masscool fan. That saved me a little bit of bucks.

Beta_Evo_quiet_rig_2011-05-30_003.png

Since I have a nibbler, I'm thinking of removing the pillars that flank each slot. Probably my next project.

Hm I was just going to recommend removing the dvd drive and putting in a scythe kama bay http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185021 but it appears it's discontinued. That is quite a shame I love mine. In my p182 case I left zalman 9500 passive (e8400) with the kama bay at front of case and single 500rpm noctua (noctuas are OK at 500 at the back of a sound proofed case OK ehume) and kept temps under 65c. But that is a complete side note and I guess I can't say that.
I just wanted to commend you/rep you for your system/documentation in this thread smile.gif .

Thanks.

I'm aware of the Kama Bay. I got something similar for my daughter's Lian Li case - the Lian Li EX-332B. It can hold three HD's, but LL also makes a fan-only device.

You do raise a good point, though. With the decline in the use of DVD drives I might try plugging mine in through an eSATA, or just get an external drive. But with the 12cm Shark on 5v, a two-slot 5.25 opening is all I need for intake.

As for the Noctua fans, they are excellent undervolted.

Sounds to me like you have an excellent setup. Care to post some pics?
