Worried about RAM choice, 1.6v+ causing SB degredation.

Hi there guys
Long time lurker and finally joined this morning.

I have had my eye on the Mushkin red/black line ram modules for this build and iv been seeing tons of "1.5v+ is causing the SB CPU degrading issue". I know there is no hard evidence to support this and Intel says 1.5v is the recommend voltage for ram modules, but it's still making me reluctant on my purchase.

Very good chance a Silver Arrow may go into the rig until i see what the Corsair H80/H100 but for now some RAM that can fit under the Silver Arrow is what im after.

Mushkins seem to be excellent performers and have low profile heatsinks so they were my first choice but they push 1.65v. Wont be doing any heavy O.C maybe 4.2ghz - 4.5ghz

Here is a pic of my build in its current state, still LOTS of work to do, powder coating next week.

Hi and welcome.
I bet the people who say 1.5v is degrading the CPU actually mean the CPU voltage, not the RAM voltage. I don't see how the CPU life can be in any way related to the RAM voltage.

Well first off the CPU would not degrade in any way, it's the IMC that degrades. And it's absolutely fine to run 1.65v RAM on an SB build. However, no one really knows yet how safe it is and if there are long term risks since it's still a new platform.

I believe it has something to do with degrading the internal memory controller within the CPU. Iv been reading on the official Mushkin forums about the high voltage concerns but the rep assures people that 1.65v is not an issue.

Then my mind yells out "Obviously your going to say that, you dont want to loose customers" G skill stuff also looks to be very high voltage wise.

Basically, running 1.65v will be fine. However, since SB is a fairly new platform no one knows yet if there are long term risks.

E-Peen makes a valid point, even then i guess it would take 24/7 max stress for the CPU to show any kind degrading.

Now Mushkin redline/blacklines?

Well, put it this way. 1.65v works fine for SB just as 1.5v works. However, Intel advises to not go further than 1.5v for memory on a SB platform, and since they advise against over-volting, many people believe that 1.65v ram will cause degradation over a long time span.

Obviously no one knows if 1.65v is ENOUGH to cause degradation because the platform is SO new.
I really doubt 1.65v going through the memory is going to affect lifespan of the processor. If anything, I would be more cautious on the VCCIO voltage. However, if you want to be cautious you can just undervolt the kit a little bit and either loosen the timings or drop the frequency a divider (e.g. 1600mhz -> 1333mhz.)

If you are worried about voltage, the G-Skill ECO is a good pick. They are priced very well, run at 1.35v, good timings and speed. They also do not have a tall heatspreader.
