What to get

Thread Starter
I need an HSF.
I have i5 2500k at 5ghz and 1.5v

Corsair A70 + scythe s-flex is what I have now and it cannot handle it. 45c idle, overheating under prime in < 10 minutes

What should I get ?

Options:
- Prolimatech Megahalems revB: $45
- Prolimatech Armageddon: $30
- Scythe Mugen 2: $35
- Thermalright Archon: $80
- Thermalright Silver Arrow: $90
- Thermalright Venomous X: $65
- Noctua NH-D14: $90

Plus fans:
- Scythe gentle typhoon: $15
- Gelid silent 12 pwm: $4
- Scythe S-Flex 1200rpm: FREE (already own it)
- Yate Loon D12SL12: FREE (already own it)

I'm thinking megahalems + 2x gelid fans for a total of $53. Opinions ? Will getting, say, VenomousX + 2x gelid fans ($73) be a better choice ?

Go with
thermalright silver arrow
or
noctura nh d14
for the fan go with
scythe gentle typhoon, they are arguibly the best fan for coolers & pc case.
Hope you like my help.

I was about to link you to svc.com's $75 Noctua NH-D14 but it seem's sometime between yesterday and today their domain name has expired, lol. Sure it will be back soon.

ooo here we go, $69.99 Noctua NH-D14 & $74.99 Silver Arrow

Directron.com has $75 Silver Arrows

if they are the same price then its the noctua nh-d14.
then its the silver arrow.(this is cheaper where i am)
both of these are the best air coolers you can buy

also make sure your case is big enough and you have clearance over your ram.
you need to fill in your system details

here is a very good independent comparison of most of the coolers you mentioned

i5 at 5ghz? $69.99 for the D-14 is a great deal. You are getting more performance for only a little more.

Don't get those kinds of deals here in Canada Closer to $90
post #10 of 10
Figured I would throw my two cents here, 5GHz is a nice speed but 1.5V is a lot of voltage, not to be a buzz kill or anything but you may have a hard time keeping the chip cool on air no matter what cooler you use. Though the D14 and the Silver Arrow are the top air coolers right now, even with one of those running 2 or even 3 3000rpm fans you may experience higher temps than you want. I encourage you to prove me wrong but it is something to consider, with the voltage that high it may be time to consider looking into a custom watercooling loop, you can get a rasa 750 rx240 kit with everything you would need short of the distilled water for $170. Heres a link: http://www.performance-pcs.com/catal...ducts_id=30280 just something to consider, if you need help there is a very active watercooling section on this forum.
