Need help underclocking an Athlon X2 6400+

It's been a while since I've done any type of "clocking" so I guess I'm missing something. CPU & motherboard are the ones you see in the sig rig.

Basically what I've done was to lower the multiplier to 10x (lowest CPU clock that I can set is 200MHz) which *should* give me a final frequency of 2GHz (as opposed to the stock 3.2GHz). Now if I reboot and enter BIOS again, the frequency is shown to be 2GHz but if I boot up to windows CPU-Z (and any other program) says it's running at 3.2GHz! frown.gif

What gives?

Bizzare issue.. Here's a thing to do - return to stock 3.2Ghz, download any intensive CPU test (LinX, OCCT, Orthos), download HWMonitor, make a few subsequent runs and record the max temp.
Then go in BIOS and drop the multi to 10x, then repeat the steps.
If the temps are lower, something in the software is wrong, and the CPU is underclocked.
If temps are the same, update BIOS.

Why are you underclocking?

Thanks for the suggestions.

I am underclocking because I am building a new PC while my sig rig (without the audio card, GPU and some other things) will become a low-power home server with a 400W fanless PSU!
To that end, I want a CPU that draws less power and generates less heat!

Consider getting an Athlon II x2 - the low-end models are extremely fast, cheap, cool, and efficient smile.gif You can get them almost for free and will fit your mobo smile.gif The voltage on those goes as low as 1.2v @3.2Ghz for the highest model - 260.

An undervolted AthII x2 can work with passive cooling even on stock freq tongue.gif

I knew you were going to suggest buying another low-end... in fact, I actually thought about explaining that I don't want to spend money on yet another CPU in my previous post since I already have some perfectly good hardware. Oh and by the way I actually have another Athlon X2 lying around, it runs at 2.7GHz stock and I plan on swapping my current CPU for that one.

Anyway, I managed to underclock it. As I suspected, I was forgetting something! It was the Cool'n'Quiet feature that kept automagically adjusting the frequency... I've disabled it and now it runs at precisely 2GHz smile.gif

Success! biggrin.gif

Great! I didn't know C&Q can raise the clock too smile.gif Never late to learn something smile.gif
