That's 9hrs... For his needs, getting a spare battery will ensure 10+ hr of operation.
Once again...

This. And if he needs to do anything more intensive (even extended media playback, wifi, using USB 3G cards, higher brightness due to sunlight etc he couldn't expect 9hrs from a Wind anyway.

And the more recent trend is to either reduce the cells in a battery to save cash & drop weight, or to make more powerful machines. Battery life hasn't really been improved.

My Asus 1001p could last 11 hours using its 6 cell battery. But that's not 11 hours straight. When I'm not using it I turn the screen off or put it to sleep. It lasts all day like this at university.

You can also get an Asus Transformer tablet with the the keyboard dock turning it into a netbook with 16 hours battery life.

Would he be able to change out the HDD? Switching to an SSD would cut down on consumption, and a spare battery would be ideal.

My suggestion (site is in German):
http://www.alternate.de/html/product...K172S/786916/?
http://www.alternate.de/html/product...40_GB/860762/?

They ship to Europe. Those two together put you a little over 300, and I doubt that he'd have a hard time finding a spare battery that pushes him over his budget.

Dell Vostro V13 $350 @ www.dell.com, just buy a spare batteryn and get a core2duo performance of a laptop in netbook sized package. 13.3" screen and super slim. Also check out ACER Timeline series lappy's. I have one for 2 years already and battery still doess 7+ hours.

I thought there was no spare battery option on the V13 - it's a screwdriver job to change it. Not sure on the Timeline.

Buy me air fair from Canada and back and I'll go in their place, you need not worry about anything else!
I think, I could very well be wrong but most places have Wifi and charging sockets everywhere in these events.

I just ordered myself one of these (Samsung NF310 A01) for €290
http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...=STRK:MEWNX:IT
10.1 screen (1366 x 768) , dual core atom.
Ordered 2GB upgrade for €20 also, got it to use around the house and garden.
Would leave you plenty for a spare battery or two, may a case.

AWWHELLNO! I had one of those, battery life is crap and if you want to change it you have to take the whole thing apart.
