Ultra Kaze gone rouge from Fan Controller?

Hello all, my first technical post... so be gentle..

Last week I built a new system, been out of it for awhile but I think it came out pretty well. This long weekend I have been tinkering and tweaking.. much fun. I picked up two Ultra Kaze 120mm 3K rpm fans to sandwich my Antech 620 rad in. I hooked both fans up to leads that come off my 600T case fan controller (~9v to ~12v I believe) and it turned out perfect for adjusting RPMs like I wanted.

Then I went to bed and this morning I hear what seems to be a C-17 Globemaster at take off. I investigate, and find out the "pull" fan is running what seems to be max RPM, while the "push" is still adjusting via the case's fan control knob. I switched to another lead and the "pull" still went max RPM with the controller turned down.

Seems like it's the fan, since the controller is still adjusting voltage for the other fan on both leads... but I am stumped as to why/how that could happen. confused.gif

No love?

I'm going out on a limb and assuming it's the cases built in fan controller, just not sure as to why one fan would jump to max RPM.

Now I am looking at some fan controllers, I am really liking the Lamptron FC-5v2 or Scythe Kaze Master KM02... I know the latter is 12W a channel but that should be enough if I do one fan per channel as the Ultra Kaze are 7.2W max.

Any input on these, or other models? I like the Sunbeam Rheobus 6, but would like the RPM/Temp readouts also.

I can't find the power specs on the built-in fan controller, but theres probably a good chance it doesn't like your .60A Ultra Kaze's. The built-in fan controller is a single pot and designed to control the stock fans, and probably low power as well.

You might check also Corsiar Forums for more info.

Thanks for the reply. This make the most sense, but curious as to why one of my kaze fans would run at full rather than not at all if I am over burdening the controller.

Either way, I think I will pick up a dedicated controller... now which one.. hrm

How many fans do you have, and do you plan to run all the fans off the new controller?

Get a dedicated controller. And a splitter if your doing pushpull.

I have a Lamptron FC-5 v2 and it's great. I have multiple fans on each channel and it handles it easily.

That.

Scythe's Kaze Master fan controller is a great piece of hardware too.

I had a Sunbeam controller that would not run a kaze at full speed, neither would a Zalman unit I tried.

Only the Lamptron with 30w per channel ran my 3k Kaze's at full rpm
