Always side for the higher end card is my choice. 5870 stock comes within 10% less performance of a GTX 480 stock. Quite a punch and very relevant card with todays gaming.

Overclocked: Our Custom Radeon HD 5870 Roundup - May 19, 2010

Comparison with three AMD 5870's. Sapphire Radeon HD 5870 Toxic 2GB, MSI AMD 5870 Lightning, Gigabyte Radeon HD 5870 Super Clocked.

Though the review is old and drivers have been improved it gives you a nice look into your options with the 5870 series.

If I were choosing one of these cards I'd definetly side with the Sapphire 5870 Toxic 2GB card if your running a larger monitor or greater resolution than 1920x1200. Otherwise I'd pick the MSI AMD 5870 TFII card. Both have great cooling options but the TFII series slightly cools better and the extra 1GB isn't going to improve performance on your 24" monitor. Your going to get a nice over clock with either card anyway. That's just my preference and my two cents.

Side with the 5870 and CF it down the road to stay on top. Enjoy. Let us know which way you went with your decsion.

MSI R5870 Lightning II Radeon HD 5870 $324.99 new on Newegg.

P.S. If you decide for budget reasons to go with the 5850 I'd side with the Sapphire Radeon HD 5850 Toxic 1GB card. I've owned a few Sapphire and I think they are a great AMD vendor. Again review on May 25, 2010 old review but there hasn't been any current reviews on these older cards. CF these and you'll still be happy, Good luck.

$244.49 Like New used on Amazon. I found a new SAPPHIRE TOXIC 100282TXSR HD 5850 1GB on Mwave.com for $349.99 but then what's the point. Go to NewEgg and buy the new 5870.

If I remember right a HD5850 at 1000/1300 is about the same as a stock HD5870 800/1000. If I am wrong please correct me.

If you're doing this to save money, then the HD 5850 doesn't fall too far behind the 5870. If you have the cash to spend on a HD 5870, though, you might as well do it. Depending on the difference in price of course.
