It worked in the other account because the other account had windows areo theme disabled. Windows Areo uses the video card to render windows and such as 2d objects within a 3d environment. Therefore upon loading into the account that uses it, the gpu switched to 3D mode and got screwed up... Or so I have guessed.

The 560ti is a bit expensive for what I'm looking for, as this rig is just used for folding and for my friends to game on with me. Is it particularly energy/heat efficient? If not, is there a cheaper/more efficient solution that will still match or best the 280's performance?
Did you try enabling Aero in the second account which works ? What happens ? Same problem ?
Did you try playing any game in second account ?
Is your card factory overclocked ? This wouldn't be a first time I see a factory overclocked card fail these clocks after couple of years of usage.
All what is needed to be done is restore factory clocks ( nvidia factory clocks )
You would need to login with that account which works and flash card bios.
You can find correct frequencies on nvidia site.
If 560 ti is expensive, then I would suggest
560 gtx - 200 $ or
460 gtx 1gb 150 $
All of these cards, including 560 ti are more energy/heat efficient then 280

I'd go for a GTS450 or maybe two (200$ for both if on sale...)
If not, A used 470.

Thanks a lot.

1) How does the 460 compare to a 280? Is there a particularly nice 460 you can suggest? I like the price on that one assuming it still bests the 280 in heat energy and performance as you suggested.

2)I tried enabling areo in the other account. same problem. I believe the card was indeed factory overclocked (OCx edition I believe but I don't remember really).

3) Can you provide any info on flashing the card on either vista or linux(ubuntu)? The other account is no longer accessible due to the error (might as well not have a monitor the second i log in). I however can get in via the second windows install I did on a separate disk, or ubuntu live CD.

Cant SLI on this rig

What does a used 470 cost usually? How do the 450 and 470 stack against the 280?

Id like to avoid used is possible (I just don't like having to jump through hoops if something is wrong with it) but if theres a reputable seller here on OCN and its very cheap than thats another story.

BTW, all suggestions have been Nvidia so far (which I prefer...but), are there ant ati cards that are a much better deal in terms of price/heat/energy? I'd be somewhat willing to take a PPD hit if it saves a large wallet hit

amd 5850 for around $150
amd 5870 for under $200

edit: never mind i guess they dont sell them anymore(any good ones)

if you buy used go with ASUS or MSI, they have 3 year warranty and you dont need to register them, they go by serial numbers.

I had the same problem happen to me actually. What solved it was switching the 2 PCI-E power cables that connect to it. It had something to do with the 2 cables i used. Probably a defective power supply for me but switching the cables worked so I don't complain.

Try it and see if it works. If you have 2 other PCI-E power connectors switch them and see if it works.

1) 460 is about the same perfomance as 280 in games, but I think it will fold better ( might be 10-15% faster in games too, depending on the games ).
Its much more heat/energy efficient then 280,since it's tdp is 160w while for 280 its 230w as far as I remember.
But you have to be careful when buying 460,since there is 3 models, only one is good other are kinda cripled. There is 768 mb version and there is SE version ( second edition ) Dont buy those. You need standard 460 gtx 1gb version.
3) Actually instead of flashing it would be easier to test first.Just download msi afterburner or evga precision and lower the clocks and see if it helps.Do you already have nvidia drivers installed in new fresh os ? Can you get past that step.If yes, just downclock with msi or evga and try to start the game or enable Aero and see what happens

A stock 460 is ~= a 285 depending on the game. While running cooler, using less power and offering DX11 goodies.

I used to own 2 460 Hawks and they were pretty beastly. I was going to mention Newegg had deals on the 460 over the weekend but it looks like they're gone. IIRC there was a 1GB EVGA SoC model going for $120 AR.

Sounds like the psu just got weaker as it aged (happens) and switching the connectors balanced the rails better. This is actually a great suggestion as this is an old SIX rail psu and could very likely have the same issue. I'll give it a try.

1) so slightly faster and much better on heat and energy, dx11, better folding (and I hear fermi's are great about not having bad fps dips...) for about 150? Sounds good. Do you know of any specific models that are good? (I hear msi's twin frozor cooled cards are good for instance?)

3) the new vista install now has the same problem ( i turned areo on before remembering to make another account... yeah) BUT I did make a backup with acronis as well as a restore point before installing the gfx drivers (suspecting they were the problem), so I should be able to restore to that point and install the gfx drivers and NOT use areo this time. I can download precision no problem (i use it on my main rig with a bfg 295. afterburner never worked with this card for some reason). Thanks a ton for this suggestion!

Ok I've got acronis doing its thing so I can test the card underclocked with evga prevision.
In the mean time, in the event this does not work, I'm looking at some cards.

It seems I should be looking at 460 and 560 from ASUS and MSI. I suppose I should ask, what difference is there between the 460 and 560? They have similar specs and are priced very close.

So far I'm looking at these (they look like the best 460/560 cards from MSI/EVGA within a reasonable price, could be totally wrong. Also the card from EVGA is there because it is listed as having 2GB of vram as opposed to 1GB on the rest, for a similar price... dunno if thats worth anything):

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127593

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127534
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127593

All of them hover around 200-220, which is more than I wanted to spend but I'm willing to do so if it is significantly better than getting a cheaper 550ti or 460 768mb/SE.

Can anyone help me out?
