Yeah i installed mobo drivers and such. As stated in the other thread, the rig had been running for about 5 years without any issues prior to this. Exact same setup including the OS.
It worked in the other account because the other account had windows areo theme disabled. Windows Areo uses the video card to render windows and such as 2d objects within a 3d environment. Therefore upon loading into the account that uses it, the gpu switched to 3D mode and got screwed up... Or so I have guessed.
The 560ti is a bit expensive for what I'm looking for, as this rig is just used for folding and for my friends to game on with me. Is it particularly energy/heat efficient? If not, is there a cheaper/more efficient solution that will still match or best the 280's performance?
Did you try playing any game in second account ?
Is your card factory overclocked ? This wouldn't be a first time I see a factory overclocked card fail these clocks after couple of years of usage.
All what is needed to be done is restore factory clocks ( nvidia factory clocks )
You would need to login with that account which works and flash card bios.
You can find correct frequencies on nvidia site.
If 560 ti is expensive, then I would suggest
560 gtx - 200 $ or
460 gtx 1gb 150 $
All of these cards, including 560 ti are more energy/heat efficient then 280
