Core 2 Duo e7300 Upgrade

Thread Starter
I do video editing and encoding in Sony Vegas Pro 10 and Adobe Premiere Pro CS5, plus Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom 3. For games I range from Worms Armageddon (lol) to Crysis 2.

I know my GPU needs an upgrade but it seems to handle most of my games on high settings okay with acceptable frame rates. The CPU is really holding me back on the non gaming apps though. It took 6 hours to encode what took my Core i7 laptop (MBP 2011) about 50 minutes to do. This is sad.

Help? I'm willing to sell my e7300 on eBay (currently going for about 80 dollars) to help with an upgrade. 775 only :/ I'll be upgrading to 1155 in a year or two, but I need a quick upgrade now.

My e7300 is 45nm, and the q6600 is 65nm; will I notice any negatives? I know the q6600 doesn't support sse4 but the e7300 does (I don't really know what sse4 does anyway, but...)

And will I see any heat issues with the 65nm? I know my e7300 stock fan rarely has to speed up even under load. My graphics card is another story altogether...

If you have sse4 it helps with encoding of videos from what i believe have a look on line.

The 65nm will run a bit hotter that the 45nm processor and if you was going to overclock the 45nm cpus generally overclock better

it will run hotter. but if you want something that overclocks better and is alot cooler, i'd go for the Q9XXX series and find something in ur budget. since ur upgrading in 1-2 years i'd suggest something like the q9300 or the q9400/q9450 since they usually go cheaper.

Okay after reading on Intel's site, I see I can get 65w or 95w versions of some of these processors (the 9550 comes in both)

What's the difference? I'm guessing the 65w would run cooler, but is there any sacrifice in performance? If SSE4 helps with video encoding, I want it; I work on deadlines.

On the Yorkfields? No sacrifice in performance. The S models tend to be cherry-picked batches with lower maximum power consumption. There is, however, a sacrifice on your wallet. From memory, Yorkfield S versions cost at least $50 more than the non-S version. Seriously, though, the Q9550 is kinda pricey (new). You can probably get an LGA-1155 MB + Core i5 Sandy Bridge for the same price. Perhaps some RAM, too with a decent sale.
