BIOS password reset

Thread Starter
So here's one for you. I have a Toshiba A210-EZ2202X that was secured with a BIOS password. One day, that Bios password stopped working. I've tried the generic Toshiba passwords with no luck. I can't (or don't want to) remove the cmos battery since it's soldered in. I shorted it with a screwdriver and went to boot. It said the Bios went back to defaults, but the password remains.

Suggestions? No idea is too out there at the moment

What motherboard? I have a giant list of back door passwords in-case you have not tried some.

Can't believe the battery is soldered in! Battery is definitely the best way.

Good Luck,

When I see the laptop again, I'll get you that board model. If I shorted the CMOS batt and it took the BIOS back to default, shouldn't it take the password? If not, I may cut one of the metal leads going in, wipe the bios, and then resolder.

If that doesn't work, I have a USB Floppy drive on the way to get medievil (pronounced "old school BIOS flash") on it.

defaulting the bios should definitely have reset the password, but you have to remove or short the battery for a few minutes for it to work properly.

*I can't believe they soldered the battery, that's just silly.

Shorted the CMOS battery for 2 minutes. Got the good old error 251: The bad check sum and revert to bios defaults. However, the password still remains. I found the jumpers and went via that method. Exact same result.

Ideas? Backdoor passwords? Desolder Battery?

Make sure you don't have the battery or AC adapter plugged in when you remove the CMOS battery, other than that I can't really think of anything else. Either the CMOS has a secondary power source to keep the BIOS password saved or it's stored permanently somewhere on the motherboard.

Have you tried contacting the manufacturer for help?

*Good luck with the BIOS flash, although wouldn't that require the BIOS password?

We've isolated the laptop from external power to do this. We contacted Toshiba who said to short it with a screwdriver...

Maybe try a CMOS reset utility from a BootCD such as Hirens or the like? I personally find KillCMOS to work exceptionally well on various laptops.
