Alternative to WHS.

Thread Starter
I currently have WHS on my home server, and it is beginning to annoy me.

1) Lets say I have a laptop thats been disconnected from the network for a month. When i connect to the wireless after that, WHS complains that the laptop hasn't been backed up for a long time, yet, it doesn't back it up. I have the backup times set to 24/7.

2)I keep getting messages from WHS about my passwords not being the same, even though they are.

3)I want to set up a test webserver on my server, but it won't work because WHS has a built in webserver built into it, which is almost impossible to disable (Or I just can't find any info about it)

4)Shared folders are displayed incorrectly on the computers:
3TB free of 445GB. Then it shows the capacity bar as full and red.

5) There isn't enough administrative tasks.

6)Doesn't always recognize the computers on the network. Right now, I am on my main computer in the home server console, and the server doesn't recognize that my computer is connected

WHS just gets annoying. Is there any better altenative?

Seems like almost all those complains about WHS are due to a lack of knowledge with WHS and how it works. Amahi is apparently the best in general as well as best free as in freedom and as in beer but I can try to address some of your WHS complaints:

1. No idea what you mean by this, I never bothered to use the back service WHS but that was entirely different reasons.

2. No idea what causing this either. Type the password into notepad or whatever then copy/paste into both places to make sure the passwords are in sync. If I you're referring to what I think you're referring to you wanted to have both identical user names and passwords for a local user on both the local machine as well as the WHS machine.

3. WHS uses MS's web service called IIS. It's actually quite easy to disable it and install apache or whatever else. I was using XAMPP on mine for quite a while with no issues. You can also run multiple sites through IIS if you wanted to. No that bit of a deal. Just google for some IIS tutorials.

4. WHS has this "drive extender" feature which your local machine is not going to be familiar with. You're not going to get accurate information about capacities or free space for the local machine when looking at network shares. That's what that admin tool software is for (connector or whatever it's called that comes with WHS).

5. Administrative tasks? What are you talking about? It's Windows 2003 server. You can admin task it all day and night. Setup web sites, turn it in to a domain controller, use AD, do whatever you want...What does that mean??

6. No idea why the WHS wouldn't be seeing your PC. Is the connector software running?

Keep in mind you may also have some issues with Amahi. Some times even when it's designed to be user friendly it requires a lot of research and effort to get things working.

The We Got Served Forums is the best resource for WHS stuff I think on the whole web.

Not necessarily trying to talk you into keeping WHS just trying to point out it some of the issues have more to do with knowledge and less to do with the faults of WHS.

yeah but why wouldn't you use the windows home connector thing to check capacities? i thought that's one of the reasons to have it.

1) You can't just back up 24/7 you set up a time to back up and the server will initiate backups at that time. Also, if it has been more than like 5 days since a computer you've registered with the server has been backed up, it complains. Simple as that. Either back it up, or in the connector software click on the health status button and disable the alert. Or the other alternative, remove the computer from backup all together.

2) If your password to login to the local machine is different than the password you use to login to the whs account, and the 2 account names are the same, things will have an issue. Also, if the computer you're using isn't the main one you use for the connector software it will be annoying all the time. The connector software on my wife's computer says the password is different all the time, no issues with connectivity though.

3) What subassy said. I have 3 hostnames resolving to my homeservers IIS webserver. It takes care of everything. Just need to learn what you have and utilize it fully.

4) Bug has already been covered and it tells me the same thing too, just keep track in the connector software.

5) Again, it's based off of Server 2003. Mine has numerous tasks working for me.

6) That's a new one.
