How much better is having a push pull system? - Page 2

Ok..so I'm more confused now. Ha. Sounds like PP definitely isn't a bad thing to have, but if its worth the extra money...

Right now I'll be cooling a i7 950, 6990, 5970 and in the future an additional 6990.

I had planned on getting another 120mm rad when I got the extra 6990.

I am planning on using Gentle Typhoon AP-15s for the fans on the rad.

For this setup would it be beneficial to get more rads or more fans on the current rads?

I would save up whatever you would spend for another 4 AP-15s and put it towards a second radiator, as that will definitely give you better performance, certainly better than just doing push/pull.

(okay, caveat, if you've got your flow restricted to the max, and adding another radiator would slow your flow down to the point of where your temps were getting too high, then it would not be advisable to add another radiator, instead it would be a little better to do push pull, but again, if your pump can handle it, you're better off adding another radiator down the road.)

If done right, inside the proper case, tuned correctly, it works awesome.
I could probably do 4.2Ghz HT/on if I wanted to.

On one of my smaller, overworked radiators i have noticed a great improvement switching to push pull.

Here is a great place to get screws for you fans. They ship fast, great quaility, and cheap:

When getting screws, make sure you factor in the thickness of the fan guards if you plan to use any. For 25mm fans, get 30mm screws if using fan guards.

That's probably similar to the improvement seen with an H50 when you put it in push/pull (or even adding shrouds AND push/pull if you're really hardcore).

But if you had the room, and the price wasn't that much more, would you prefer to add another radiator? I can't imagine push/pull adding much more efficiency when you've got a 480 radiator...

^^^ Ya you are right Gumby, fully agree.

I have a 120mm and a 360mm. I have 2x5870s going through the 120, and adding the 2nd rad knocked off 10C. For sure would be better with a 240mm in just push or pull.

The thing is, if you only have room for 1 rad, and can squeeze the extra fans in, then it its worth it if you want a few more degrees off. But the shroud idea is also very good. Push with shrouds has given me good temps in the past as well

So instead of 8 AP-15s get 4 and then an additional XSPS RX120 rad? I don't think my flow will be to restricted. This is the plan as of now:

pump>res>120rad>cpu>480rad>6990>6990>5970>

the pump i'll be using

The more rad you can fit, the better... But 120 should suffice since your main is a 480. Be sure to do more research before pulling the trigger, as your setup is a bit out of my paygrade, and I can't even dream that big If the rule of thumb is 1-1.5 x 120mm of radiators per core in the loop, 5x120mm (480+120) concerns me, even though the RX series are fantastic radiators.

Great pump, never any complaints about it, and it's a staple in the hobby. If you're ever concerned with performance, or want to add a 5.25" bay reservoir, you can adapt the pump to fit those applications with simple add-on purchases.

For your order, it doesn't really matter, but I would always suggest putting the radiator after your graphics thermonuclear pile That way the pump gets slightly less heat. In reality it probably doesn't matter (Its been thrown around that it's a 1-3c temperature difference between heating components within a loop, and my experience is 1-3c exactly between GPU 1 and GPU2 cores), I just feel weird saying that.

Hopefully 5x120mm will be enough for 6 gpu cores and the quad cpu.... If not guess I just have to get more XD

Ah ok. So pump>res>cpu>480rad>6990>6990>5970>120rad, would be a little bit healthier for the pump?

Hopefully 5x120mm will be enough for 6 gpu cores and the quad cpu.... If not guess I just have to get more XD

i'm no expert on these things, haven't even built my first yet, but i am in the planning stage. i had heard that the pump should always come after the res. you may want to verify that.

i suggest:
res>pump>cpu>120rad>6990>6990>5970>480rad

i think the rest of the loop doesn't *really* matter, though some say it's better to do CPU first for slightly better temps (hearsay.) i flipped your two rads also, but again, i don't think it ultimately matters. set it up in a way that is best for your case (as long as res>pump and pump is lower than res)
