I am considering a Phenom II x4 build to replace my E6400
Definitely go i5 2500k if you can afford it. I had phenom x4 940 overclocked and it was barely faster than my q6600 at the time.

I almost built a Phenom II 965 + 4 gigs ram + 790fx mb + Blu-Ray player + case + psu for $400 Find me a 2500 for anywhere near that price and i'd jump on it

So I'd have a Q6600 and a Pii965, getting rid of the dual core e6400

Core 2 is faster clock-for-clock than Phenom II. Everyone seems to forget that just because C2 is phased out and PII is still in production.

You'll have a faster system with an "old" 4.0 C2Q than with a new 4.0 PII X4.

I'm not getting rid of the q6600 i'm getting rid of the dual core e6400

And everything I see shows the Phenom II's beating the q6600, but I don't know about clock for clock when you start overclocking

i would go Q9XXX series if your going super high end on the graphics card since theyre more likely to hit the 4.0Ghz mark.

I saw the same reviews and I got a great deal on the 940be which was supposed to beat the q6600 and it was negligible. The be was clocked to 4.2 while to q6600 was about 3.7.

I have a Q6600 at stock clocks and with two GTX 460s in SLI i run Black Ops (i know not very demanding) maxed out at 1920x1080 at a worst case of 40FPS but runs ~90 on average.

also has no problem running Fallout NV at the same resolution (havent ran it with the second card yet)

The CPU may be bottlenecking the cards though, i only see maybe 70% GPU usage under load. i need to get my 3ghz OC back

Yea PII X4 needs about +200MHz to catch a C2Q.
