overclocking I7 950

Thread Starter
I'm new to overclocking. Just a quick question. what is better for an overclock on an I7 950? A 20 multiplier and 200 bus speed or a 24 multiplier and a 167 bus speed. Both give same cpu and ram speed or is there no differance

go with whatever is more stable in prime95. neither is intrinsically better or worse

the higher bus should increase RAm performance if that is a factor, id honestly use odd multipliers

could try 191x21, i also heard odd multiplier is more stable, but if 20 or 24 works fine with prime for 12-24hrs, then it's really up to you.

just one note, that qpi voltage seems a little toasty, i won't keep that for 24/7 use. you might wanna dial down that ram speed to either 1600-1800, which is pretty damn fast already, and keep qpi under 1.35 (intel's recommendation). i know it seems a bit of a waste, but at frequencies lower than rated 2000, you can tighten the timings to make up for the speed loss.

Most people say odd multipliers are better, but I've yet to see a real difference personally, and I've tested a bunch of multipliers. Like others have said see what's the most stable for you. I have better luck with higher bclk than higher mults. Really though I choose based on what will give me the memory speed I want. Right now I run 23*213 so that I get a memory speed of 2130MHz. +1 on turning down your QPI as you're on air. You'll use up your thermal budget trying to hit those ram speeds.

couldn't help noticing you have a frio on top of a 950, just like me. also you use 191x21 @ 1.3 vcore (same as what i tried before). what temps do you get in prime95 or intel ibt? mine gets a little toasty, that's why i'm back on stock @ 1.05vcore now...

sorry op for going a bit off topic here...

The cooler seems to do pretty good for air. It is big. I have done some playing around pi test does better with these settings. core temps are higher because of higher clock and vcore. This board seems very easy to over clock with. Not sure where I want to set the over clock to many options. Thanks for the replys.
