Call of Duty bashing

Thread Starter
First off, I neither support nor is against CoD games, so please don't burn me alive. From what I've heard, many people dislike hate CoD because of:

1. same graphics engine since Modern Warfare 1
2. little improvements between games
3. horribly optimized for PC (Black Ops)
4. $59.99 cost
5. most recently, the consideration of a monthly fee for subscribers

Now, I would share my opinions on this, and once again, please don't flame.

1. The CoD franchise appeals to the mass audience, who, unlike my OCNers, don't have high end hardware. Lots of people wouldn't be able to play newer games if they had increasing better graphic engines, due to their hardware limitations.

2. I think that people think of this because they are so used to every game. In my opinion, there are some considerable changes. Every new game has new maps, new weapons, changed killstreakes/perks, and a new campaign. If we look at Crysis Warhead, it had what? A new campaign, same graphics engine, new maps, some new weapons and vehicles?

3. I can see how this will piss people off. In fact, its a huge reason on why I don't have Black Ops.

4. Most games do start off at the $60 price, then slowly drop down. If you buy MW1 right now then it is probably over 50% off the original price.

5. I seriously don't see anything wrong with this. They are not forcing people to buy this, only those who want subscribe for extra benefits. Doesn't World of Warcraft charge something like $15 per month+buying the actual game?

1. They could update the engine. The guys over at battlefield have been updating it to do bigger and better things such as DX11 (Tesselation, etc...) And be better optimized. Look at BC2. It looks BEAUTIFUL even on the Xbox 360. Black Ops barely looks any better than COD:4.

New engines aren't just about better graphics that eat through hardware. It's also about optimizing things for older hardware.

2. You're looking at the difference between a game and an expansion of that game. Of course there isn't going to be much difference. From COD:4 which came out in 2007, to Black ops which came out 4 years later, nothing MAJOR has changed. New killstreaks are cool. Perks are decent. But is anything intuitive?

No.

You can purchase the DVD and get 1 month free or download the client and pay the monthly there.

I agree. Although as a consumer, the only way I will accept subscription is vast dedicated servers and no 60$ entry fee.

You can't really compare an MMO subscription with just how huge it is in all respects, to an online FPS like call of duty.

I would agree with the OP. Also, the bashers do realize they are just bashing with an audience that is the same as them? Does that make them feel better?

I recently made the following post on the Steam forums about a very similar subject and explained why I dislike the game/series. It's none of those five reasons, really (though in small ways they're also possible reasons). I don't just hate the game to do it. I genuinely dislike what the game itself is, and that's before you factor in the success/hate/Activision/etc. (which, yes, makes it worse, but isn't the sole factor).

To clarify what I mean by lame is...

1. I don't feel too engaged because I feel like I'm experiencing too much of an interactive script.
2. I feel like the series is too watered down and lacks depth. I feel like it holds my hand. It holds your hand to appease to the impatient instant gratification crowd. The result is a watered down and shallower game lacking depth. Freedom is lost. Therefore, the feeling of being engaged and actively playing is more lost.
3. It's a linear trip through script-ville. The linearity adds to it all and makes it worse (linearity alone isn't a make or break, but in this case, it still plays a part). Replayability is lost. Freedom is lost. Therefore, I feel less engaged.
4. I'm generally fine with stuff staying similar (I'd actually rather that happen!), so I don't just hate it because "it's the same game every year". However, the series has been continually watered down without any innovation or creativity while being churned out at an increased rate.
5. The success of the series itself does not bother me (though I do think it's a bit unwarranted/overrated). However, the success of it influencing other series (especially ones I like) to become more like it (Crysis 2), that does bother me. I was jaded to see a series that was something else/that I liked become more like something totally different/something I didn't like.

That's not really touching many of the smaller issues either. It's basically the extreme combination of the first three things (which I colored/highlighted). Call of Duty, all in all, can be an okay game for what it goes for, but at the same time, I feel it's vastly overrated, much in part to people who are just jumping onto the bandwagon (much more so than any "haters").

Only if they can stop optimizing and actually start fixing their crap they called coding. Sniping people from inside walls is getting boring now
