What SLI GPU will fully utilize a 5GHz Sandy Bridge? - Page 2

Not sure how much I believe anything anyone has said, I run an E8500 at 3.8ghz with 1gb 460 sli oc ed to 775mhz

First of all, there was a big difference going one one 460 to having 2. Very occaisionally you will see a temp drop in frame rates while the cpu loads something but not enough to take away any enjoyment.

a Phenom x4 BE will be much faster than e8500 and therefore more than enough for 2 460s

People exaggerate this bottlenecking issue way too much

EDIT: Also like to add that I have found a slow HDD or one running out of space has caused more dropped frame rates than the cpu

No it will not be much faster it is on par with Core2Duo if any at that.

A phenom x4 is a large bottleneck for CPUs. I should find you some good reviews to back this up, but I'm sure your google Fu is strong, or balla can chime in.

Ok, I'll bite.

What game do you have?

Also your chip is pretty much on par with a Phenom II clock for clock, only when you play games optimized for more cores would the Phenom II chips pull ahead.

We both just looked at the same thing. Surprisingly, after going through a lot of the comparisons, an e8500 is still reasonably potent! I m surprised.

OP just get a 2500k, and an AS ROck Extreme 4 Z68 board. Best bang for buck combo at the moment. I m ordering mine shortly

It's rather that people (myself included) tend to underestimate the role of a CPU in gaming. I thought my Q9550 @ 4GHz was enough to push my dual 470s, but even with a single 470 @ 1200P the quad turned out to be quite a bottleneck compared to the 2600K.

EDIT:

Not in Mafia II though.

I fully accept that in many games, this cpu will hold back a gpu from fufilling its full potential. BUT, even if you have a e8500 or something worse, you will still see a benefit in going from a single 460 to a 580 etc

The only time I will care if my cpu is bottlenecking the gpu is if I m getting less than 60fps and so far this has not consistently happened

I was getting 60 FPS in most games with my 470s but as soon as it got CPU intensive my frames would drop below the 40s and 30s. Bottlenecking isn't about not being able to see the difference because of a slower part, but being able to get more out of a part by replacing the slower part.

I've gamed on C2D and C2Q a lot and it's a totally different experience if you game on a different CPU architecture. Really I don't even look at my FPS if I game, but the experience is totally different. I just feel when the FPS is fluctuating a lot or if it's smooth. My cards do get quite a bit hotter now though
