Downgrading

Thread Starter
I am considering downgrading my rig... I mean I only play SC2, TF2 and CS:S, so I would prefer to maybe go back to like a 775 system and pocket the difference so then I can save up for my next rig when a new Starcraft game or Valve online FPS comes out that my computer can't run. My current specification are in my sig rig...

What parts I will purchase:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600- It is a classic and you really can't go wrong with it after you OC it to a generous 3.6GHz and then it can support many mid-range GPU's out today. Combined with my 5850, it should run perfectly!
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB- I am sick of having the RAID 5 because it means that every time I switch rigs I need to back it all up instead of just simply swapping. Also I can get this for super cheap and it will store all of my files with ease.

Questions:
What would be a good 775 motherboard that would give me a 3.6GHz OC and that would support my DDR3/1600 RAM?
What would be a cheap CPU cooler that when combined with Arctic Silver MX-4 thermal paste would give me the 3.6GHz OC using its stock fans?

Resulting Build:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
Motherboard?
Team Elite 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3/1600
Asus Radeon HD 5850
G.Skill Phoenix Pro 60GB
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB
LG GH22NS50
Cooler Master Silent Pro 600W
Cooler Master 690 II
CPU cooler?

This also means that I will have a lot of parts to sell locally to my friends: (These parts are not on sale @ OCN as I do not have sufficient REP and I am in China...)
AMD Phenom II x4 965 Black Edition + Asus M4A79XTD Evo + Corsair H50
Intel Core i5-2300 + ASRock P67 Pro3
Colorful GeForce GTS 450 512MB
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio
4 x Western Digital Caviar Blue 320GB
Cooler Master GX 750W
Generic 4-Port Fan Controller w/ LCD Panel & 7-in-1 Media Card Reader

That should bring in the dough

I personally dont think it is worth it, just keep what you have, im sure you will be able to earn for when new games you likee come out...

I just sold my my whole rig to downgrade too.
I would go for a little i3 540 and overclock the hell out of it.
a small p55 board with some good ram and you are good to go.
I guess it is smarter not to downgrade because i'm guessing this will save you more money in the long run? But in respect to your post, if you're looking for a decent/good 775 board the try looking for a gigabyte GA-P45-UD3P or asus p5q pro/deluxe. Those two should do the job

You want an H55 board for i3 overclocking.

OP needs one with DDR3 compatibility.
That would be 790i (eww) or X48 (Expensive!)
If you're going 775 (OP) get DDR2!!!

Do you seriously believe that Valve and Blizzard will soon release a new game which will run poorly on a core i5-2300??

Your core i5-2300 should be good for 2-4 years (or more).

Currently, most Valve and Blizzard games are only 1-2 core threaded. Why buy an old 4-core cpu to play 2-core threaded games?

If you must downgrade, then
i3-2100 or i3-2120 + H61/H67 motherboard
or
i3-550/560 + H55 motherboard and overclock (on $20-$30 air cooler) to 4.2-4.4GHz (or higher)

I was talking to my friend (who practically shares this system with me, considering the amount of times he uses it) today and I decided that I will just run my current rig down until I feel as though I need to upgrade it. My next upgrade is going to turn my rig into more of a work station for college as I will be doing Electrical Engineering and I would love a killer CAD rig. So for now my sig rig will stay as it is and when it starts degrading for my level of gaming- the CAD rig will come to life!!! MuHAHAHA
