Advice needed! - First time applying TIM?

Thread Starter
Okay! So i've noticed my nVidia 9800gt XFX was running at about 70 degrees idle.

So i've bought some thermal paste, but i've heard alot of different methods to applying it to get the best results, some saying to put a pea size others say grain of rice and leave it for 10 minutes etc etc.

I want to put it on my GPU (9800gt XFX)
and my CPU (AMD Phenom x4)

what do you advise is the best amount and way to apply to each of these?

Thanks in advance! +rep to everyone who I find helpful.

Hi i do the rice method and it works pretty good for me. Just put a little more than a rice grain and put the heat sink directly ontop. You may even want to put a little more than in the pic...like 1.5x more

GPU is an X pattern, as there is more area to cover. CPU should be a straight line.

EDIT: CPU should be a dot. GPU, granted it's a GTX580, but application should be similar.

I've never done it on a gpu but it should be the same, maybe an x

So you don't spread it on a cpu? I youtubed it 'How to Apply Thermal Compound to a CPU' and the first video a guy spreads it with a business card and says its the 'proper way' D: too many ways!! haha

I just replaced the TIM on both my CPU and GPU.
I used the rice method in the middle for the CPU.
For the GPU it kinda depends on the heatsink. For my GPU I put a line at one end, then used a credit card to spread it out over the entire GPU.

I used MX-4 and it dropped my temps by around 3 or 4 degress on load for each.
So these methods worked for me.

put a line along one side of the gpu and then spread it nice an evenly with a credit card/plastic card like that.

Yeah, there are many methods, all of which work fine. If you want to spread it, go ahead. If you want a dot, an x, a straight line across, etc......go for it. As long as heat is dissipated correctly and there are no air bubbles, you are good to go.

I personally use the grain of rice in the middle and set the cooler on top. Run a few stress tests to spread it.

As for the GPU, you can do the same thing. Pressure and heat will spread it. All GPUs I have ever reapplied paste to had a huge glob applied at the factory, so obviously overflow isn't a problem with QC.

Practice makes perfect. Apply, check, and re-apply.
