Computer lagging...

What answers do you guys need from me to help diagnose this obnoxious issue I'm having?
At first I thought it was my gfx card b/c while gaming it would take a while to render and would "freeze frame" altogether often.
Got a new GTX480 and it's still doing it, although slightly less.
Do I need more ram?

I have a Dell XPS730, I got it back in 09 so it's not terribly old. It has a i7 940 (I know, should have gone with the 920) but it is what it is.
What are some things I can do to get my games (mainly Aion and Dawn of War 2 with some COD in there) to run smooth.

Aion is only giving me around 30 fps, I would think that the new card would help out a lot more.

I've also been tossing around the idea of rebuilding it. Getting a new Mobo and ram and kind of start from scratch with a already decent set up. Would it be worth it to get a new i7 cpu? Possibly a 950? I don't know how well a 940 OC's.

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!

Do you perform regular maintenance on it? Disk, Reg cleans, defrags etc etc. Goes a long way.
Have you (properly) checked for malware? full scan in safemode with network cable out.
You asked if you need more ram, but you didn't specify how much you have currently.
What operating system do you have?

MY guess is the OS is becoming sluggish and a fresh install would sort it easy. Providing its not hardware, which i douth it is, hardware generally works..or it doesn't, no half n' half.

Welcome WhiskeytangoM3, firstly please go here and add your system specifications: http://www.overclock.net/specs.php?do=addsystem

Then once youve done that report back

Apologies, I have Vista 64 with 3 gigs of ram.

I've set it up so it performs regular maint. every wed defrag and all. I have not however run a full scan in safemode with cable out.

I don't have much on the computer as far as files go, it's purely my ****s and grins rig, just internet, gaming and that's pretty much it. I have a laptop for everything else.

Which programs and methods do you guys suggest I take to get a base line reading so I know what I'm working with here.
I'm seriously thinking about grabbing a EVGA Classified and going to town on it.

memtest for RAM, HDTUNE for hard drive error check, IntelBurnTest for testing CPU.

Do you use MSE? Microsoft Security Essentials.

Recently they put out an update to it that added additional monitoring and behavioral monitory options. These lagged my system, games would seem to have really bad input lag, my frames would be inconsistent.

Disabling these extra couple of options immediately cleared my issues.

So if you use MSE check the options settings.

Awesome, thanks for the help guys. I'll try these out first thing when I get home.

But let me ask you guys this. With everything I've got in that computer right now, it's surely has good components in there to begin with, the only thing I'd need to really replace to "set it free" would be a motherboard right?

Is the i7 940 pretty decent to overclock? I'm not looking for monster numbers, but upwards of 4 would be nice.

Again, thanks for the info, I'll go home and get that stuff done and see what happens and report back soon!
