While this is true, it mostly depends on the quality of the gpu and what cooling you have. The only time that many phases really shines is when your overclocking on ln2. You might have a slight advantage in air/water cooling because your able to push the volts higher without the possibility of overheating, but it is for the most part overkill.
However, this is ocn, so I say get the lightning card if you want the best performance possible on air. If your looking to watercool, you might want to get a reference card like the evga, but do not get a superclocked card, the vanilla 580's are generally much better clockers.
