Just Cause 2 & Metro!!

Thread Starter
I just got both these games and wow (i know i'm a bit late) am I having a blast! Just Cause 2 runs clean as hell! I dont think it's maxed out but the quality is still amazing and its smooth as butter. I'm completely convinced that I made the right decision selling my PS3 a year ago and putting all the money into upgrading my PC. Duke Nukem Forever on the horizon with BF3 and MW3, I can't wait!!

Metro 2033, however, is quite choppy. Eventhough it's quite a beautiful and horrifying game that completely immerses me, JustCause2 is much more playable due to not stepping (at all).

This leads me to the point of this thread...

I've been thinking my next upgrade, before I switch to SB or BD, is my GPU!

Been looking at the 6970 Lightning, some 6950's and of the very expensive 580, along with some 570's.

Both these games have NVidia logos on the intros! I'm totally dead-set on a triple-monitor setup in the future and CF/SLI upgrading to 3xCF/SLI is highly likely. Which GPU path should I take? Nvidia or ATi? I'm on a 1080p screen right now, by the way.

Would upping my CPU clock speed/CPU-NB/NB result in metro playing any smoother? Just asking!!

The reason it says Nvidia on the intro of the games, is because Nvidia worked with the devolpers to add in some special feature or something for nvidia gpu's only.

Like in Just Cause 2 you get the Bokeh filter (maybe I'm spelling that wrong) which makes water look very realistic.

In Metro 2033 you get tessolation, and nvidia gpu's tend to do better in terms of fps with metro.

Either one is good for triple screens. I wouldn't try running games with a single 6950 at 5760x1080 at any decent setting, but it will work. I myslef would go for two or three 6950 2gb's then unlock them to 6970's. You could also go for tow or three gtx 570's which would give you around the same performance for another $100-$150, but you also get all of those fancy features I talked about.

In Metro turn off Advanced Depth of Field, its a framerate killer. People who have tested Metro have found it to be almost entirely GPU dependant. So upping your CPU clock speed wouldn't have an effect. Try OCing your 5770. As Willanhanyard said two unlockable 6950's would be a great setup. MSI states the 6950 TFIII's are unlockable

I was worried about unlocking them and figured that an overclocked 6970 would really be where it's at instead of unlocking the 6950's. I figure an unlocked 6950 is taking more strain than a 6970, but, I dont know enough about GPU's to be certain.

I have Gigabyte's SuperOverclocked edition 5770. I believe it's running at 900Mhz right now, how would I up it?

so the 6950s from MSI are still unlockable?

I believe that a 2gb 6950 is the same exact thing as a 6970, except without the 8+6 pin power connecters, and a different bios.

Metro 2033 has issues with all cards so you're not gonna be able to max it unless you go the SLI route or wait for Kepler.

This is actually one of the reasons I chose not to buy NVIDIA card this time even thought it was due time (I usually alternate ATI/NVIDIA)...

I don't want to feed a monopolistic beast... It's bad when either company has exclusive features because it then allows them to skimp on price/performance ratio.

BTW I run JC2 on my AMD card and the water looks just fine without the Bokeh filter.

I've seen the comparison on YouTube and there's just no significant difference.

The Bokeh filter is a completely different option than the "GPU Simulated Water" option

This is the CUDA enhanced water for nvidia GPU's

Ohh trust me, you'll see the difference with Cuda Simulated Water. It was one of those Wow moment when I first turned it on.
