I have a new stress-test.........

Thread Starter
As the title implies, I have a new stress test for my rig when I OC. I bought a new/old Asus P6T Deluxe mobo for a smoking-good deal and I wanted to have another crack at OC'ing my miserable C0 3838B i7 processor to 4ghz.

I had previously used a Gigabyte EX58-UD3R and most recently an MSI X58 Pro with the same i7 processor. The best I could do was 3.93ghz which was not entirely stable. I would've had to pump a lot more volts into the Vcore and QPI and I was not comfortable with that. As it was I was at 1.4250v on the Vcore and the max 1.340v on the QPI. I know I could have gone higher with the Vcore but that was the max I wanted to go for 24/7 operation.

Anyway, back to the point. I installed the i7 into my P6T Deluxe and started overclocking it. I got it to 3.6ghz relatively easy as I've noticed that I could achieve 3.4 to 3.6 with little-to-no voltage adjustments (like my other i7). The VID of the C0 is (I think) 1.2250v so I'm sitting at about 1.2375v for the 3.6ghz. I start Prime95 and run it for 2 hours without errors, temps about 61c on the hottest core.

Cool I think! It's OC'd higher for the given Vcore than the other mobo's. I think I have a winner....... NOT.

I start playing one of my favorite games, Dead Space and I can't get past the part where I get the gun. Game freezes and I have to reset to clear. I try BulletStorm and was able to play to the point where Ishi is getting the limbs Bio-welded to his body when it does the same thing. WTH?!?! 2 hours of Prime is less stressful than Dead Space or BulletStorm apparently. Of course the gaming stresses parts of the system that wouldn't ordinarily be stressed by P95 plus it draws a lot more wattage from my PSU.

You can bet the I'll add "gaming" to my testing from now on!

You could try Crysis benchmark too
not suprising....2hrs of Prime95 doesn't mean your system is 100% stable. Before I validate ANY OCing i run P95 for 24hrs on large FFTs.

I have OCed a i7 920 to 4.2Ghz on air on a EVGA E770 (Classified 3) I cant remember the Vcore of the top of my head but it was a little high. Friends rig which is under water now on the 4.2ghz OC

I generally used LinX for bloomfield, 20 passes with all memory & if it passed that it could run anything I tried stable, & a lot faster at finding instability than prime95.

How long does it take to run 20 passes of Linx? If I recall, I ran OCCT and it was acting kind of weird. The test still ran but the video was acting like it was trying to start the screensaver or turn off the monitor. I wonder if that was trying to tell me something?

I have used LinPack on OCCT which I understand is based on Linx, not this time but I have used it in the past. I just haven't had this issue where 2 hours of P95 was not enough to adequately test my rig to do some gaming without crashing. Lesson learned........

It may be your cpu overclock, dial it back and try again, if you still crash it could be your gpu overclock, gpu vrm's overheating or maybe your power supply is dying. I've had all of the above problems before.

Prime95 works, but has to run much longer to really test loaded cpu with high ram. It is easier to run though, with linx & IBT so many people leave everything default & test with very little ram usage & aren't really stable even though it can pass. For gulftown & sandy bridge prime95 is probably just better overall.

It does, a lot of people with HT enabled forget to set the number of threads on IBT & don't really stress it though (on auto tests with 4 cores/threads, only 50% stress). Linx automatically loads all cores/threads.
