Introduction/Recommendations on my rig

Thread Starter
So im new here just wanted to introduce myself, im an avid gamer by night and a graphic designer by day. I just upgraded to my first custom build from a gateway fx laptop that was nothing but problems(had to replace the MoBo, Vid Card, Ram, and battery over a 3 year period). Anyways, here is my build tell me what you think... and if it is necessary to overclock it ... a few guys at work told me that i would just shorten the life span of it... True/Untrue?

Case(CoolerMaster HAF 922 Gaming Case - Black)
Processor(Intel® Core™ i7-2600K Processor (4x 3.40GHz/8MB L3 Cache))
Processor Cooling(Asetek 550LC Liquid CPU Cooling System (Intel) - ARC Dual Silent High Perfornamce Fan)
Memory(8 GB [2 GB X4] DDR3-1600 Memory Module
Video Card(NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 - 2GB - Single Card)
Motherboard([SLI] ASUS Sabertooth P67 -- Thermal Armor Airflow design)
Power Supply 700 Watt
Hard Drive (2 TB HARD DRIVE -- 32M Cache, 7200 RPM, 3.0Gb/s - Single Drive)
Meter Display(NZXT Sentry LX Aluminum Fan Control, Clock, and Temperature Display)
Sound Card (3D Premium Surround Sound Onboard)
Network Card (Onboard LAN Network (Gb or 10/100))

What do you guys think about this build any recommendations, thoughts, likes/dislikes

manufacturer of PSU?
If you need 8GB of ram better would be 2 siticks by 4GB each, less stress on IMC

edit: maybe a diffrent GPU a 560 ti?

change the PSu to something like Antec is always good for budget and even high end.

You want to get an SSD, even do this actually, if you don't wanna spend lots of money like more than $50 then get a small SSD, 32gb woudl be fine, and then change your board to a Z68 board and use SSD Caching with your large HDD< it will great improve the overall speed of the HDD.

Get a GTX 560 instead.

You don't need any liquid cooling lol, you should just get a corsair H70 if you want to do it tho, as neither that nor the astek are considered better than top end air-coolers, for that you gotta build your watercooler basically.

Can i Ask a question? You are buying all of those sound cards and LAN card even, why not opt for X58, get a i7 950 and a G1. Sniper or G1. Assassin board, i have the assassin its a great board and has integrated NIC and Audio. and my GPus can run at 16x.

Here is the thing, when you toss in the GPU with those addon cards you lose PCI-E lanes, and your card wont run at full 16x, if you have a large screen it will impact FPS, or itll impact it anyways.

The X58 platform has double the PCI-E lanes.

NVM i saw you just were getting a sound card, make sure its a 1x PCI-E card.

Or get a 64gb or 90GB SSD and put windows on it, and vital programs, and then use teh HDD for games and everything else.

I personally would get an SSD, its the way of the future, and there is night and day difference in general tasking between HDD and SSD.

I like the cpu - don't worry about overclocking shortening the lifespan, as long as you don't run crazy voltages (>1.45V) or temps (>80C) you'll be fine, you may shorten the lifespan from 10 years to 9 years, but really something else will die before then.

I don't like the cooler, I would wait a couple of weeks to get the corsair h100 personally, or go with a real water cooling setup like one of the xspc kits.

I don't like the 460 2gb card, particularly as a single card. I would either get 2x460 1gb cards, or a 560 1gb, or look out for a 2nd hand 480, darwin is selling a barely used one for $225 I believe.

You don't need a 700w supply for 1x460, 500-600W should be plenty. I would suggest a seasonic gold rated supply, but you can go cheaper, just don't buy a piece of junk (i.e. ask in the power supply forum before you buy). If you want to SLI in future (or if you're wanting a 480) you'll need more power i.e. at least 650W, possibly up to 850W depending on your cards of choice and how much you want to overclock.

I like the case, it's not my style, but they're good cases.

The motherboard is ok. I would strongly suggest a SSD if you can afford it.

I thought it didn't matter. With the NF200 controller even when reduced to X8/X8 a SB setup will beat a X58 setup. In fact I'm fairly positive of that. The only thing x58 still holds over SB is the hex cores and memory bandwidth.

This is a rig i built already, built it a month ago. I am getting dual GTX 560s this weekend.
The sound and lan are integrated ... as far as the board... why are you against the p67 is it a bad board?

Yeah I'd disagree with this unless you're willing to buy 2nd hand as you can get some sweet deals on x58 right now. The G1 boards are pretty damn pricey, and buying a 950 rather than a 2600k seems like a bad move. I could understand it if the OP needed more threads then they could go with a 970 or if they wanted to run SLI. I did see an assassin board for sale on H for $275 though which is a steal. The OP could buy an nf200 board for the 2600k if they are worried about pci-x lanes, it adds latency to the bus though but in general you should be fine. Unless the OP is definitely wanting to run SLI I would stick with the 2600k.

If you already bought everything why are you asking us for advice , there is nothing wrong with p67, but z68 just came out and if you hadn't have bought it it might have been a better choice.

>> edit I re read it, I see now, so yes most people thought you were were planning on buying this gear. So yes have fun with it, do overclock it.

The real question is, does he really need the few additional features of z68 boards.
