Spoiled CRT fan contemplating purchasing unknown LCD/LED - Page 2

1: LED is a gimmick and most often a downside.

2: 1200p res is quite low. Even my 17" mid end CRT does more than that comfortably.

3: Advertised Contrast ratios are advertising lies. They matter in no way whatsoever, especially when they are dynamic.

4: Response times are also a marketing lie. They matter in no way whatsoever, since the real numbers are like 10-30ms. (colour to colour)

5: CRTs still beat every LCD in some areas of performance. The GOOD ones provide sharper image, better colours, flat surface, no ghosting, no input lag, and refresh rates above 120hz, like mine does 170hz. Higher resolutions per size. Because of this monitor , I rarely use my side monitors (LCD) anymore because they look like crap in comparison.

6: CRTs are better for fast paced gaming, due to a number of features I am too lazy to list, but will do if you ask me to.

If you have allowed yourself to believe that CRTs are worse just because they are older, I feel sorry for you. You have obviously never seen a good one.
CRTs are better at low res 2d games like starcraft too even crappy CRTs are better displaying such games than LCD.

Are you really gonna argue 16:9 to 16:10 i'd pick a monitor and if it's either than so be it. Seriously thats petty thing to argue over I know people that would be lucky to have kind of nice LCD or CRT.

EDIT: De-Zant It still correct about the CRT vs LCD.

Go and see a proper one, not a trash one.

I could say that all LCD monitors look like trash because I once saw an ancient 15" 1024x768 LCD and it looked horrible and had horrible colors. That's what you're doing here. There's high end and low end. That's it. Don't generalize.

(Most likely you're trollin', but I can never be sure)

There's no room for opinion in the face of fact. It would be opinion if you said that you prefer the small physical size to the high quality image, and I would accept that, however, you're just shouting nonsense, that is not opinion. That is just borderline trolling, or just very very very very ignorant thoughts originating from your gullibility that made you believe marketing so easily.

Acknowledge facts, THEN form opinions.

@OP: I'm sorry the thread derailed.

I personally have the ACER monitor in question, I do enjoy it, its a sharp, colorful LCD with decent blacklight, but apart from the Refresh Rate (120 Hz when compared to your Mitsubishi), I feel you will find everything else a bit of a downgrade component wise.

Its common knowledge that CRTs are the best for high pixel density, high res, high refresh rates, and cheaper to boot compared to their flat panel brethren.

The trade off for a CRT is you get Space, Less Heat, and Less Power Consumption. The price of LCDs incorporates those 3 features greatly, so if you don't care about space, heat generation (not all CRTs are terrible), and power consumption, then stick with the CRTs.

As far as aspect ratio goes, its all about personal preference. Almost all games support all ratios (at least modern games), so if you LIKE widescreen then go for it, if you don't think standard will be continued to be supported, I don't see it going anywhere any time soon.

In games, 16:10 vs 16:9 doesn't matter that much. Only 0.5% of games support 16:9 better than 16:10.

The only downside of 16:10 is in TV shows, and movies, since there are black bars

There really is no point in demanding 16:9. Whatever the 16:9 fans on OCN say, it's not more supported, it's not inherently better for games, it's nothing really better. It's just another aspect ratio, get over it.
I never said it was superior. 4:3 is the superiorest.
I only stated that the industry is trending toward 16:9 so I'm trying to stay ahead of the curve.

If I could buy a new CRT right now that was 16:9 that cost about 200$ and was 25 inches diag with a refresh rate of 100hz I'd be in hog heaven....but honestly that just is not possible.
(That or I'm wrong...and I'd like nothing more than to be wrong about this in particular

Idealy I'd like to hold out for something along the lines of the speed of TN the brightness of CRT and the color production of IPS.....i.e. OLED....but that is going to be another 3 years at least.

Your best bet is a 16.10 CRT IMO. I mean really, consider this all here. You are not going to find anything with the speed, motion clarity, and no input lag, and high refresh rates, that CRT offers, while still having good colors. Heck, even without them, no LCD can beat a good CRT in those areas. However, you can't find speed and good colours in one with an LCD. That's just a harsh fact ATM. Although, 120hz IPS monitors are making their way into the market right now, but maan are they expensive.

Two things can happen here

1: You buy a mediocre LCD that's going to be bad at one or two things at least. Either have to sacrifice being suitable for fast paced gaming or good colours.

2: You get a 16.10 CRT like the famous FW900 and enjoy it to the fullest. If the market begins to favor 16.9 too much, that's not going to happen in the next two years at least, but maybe afterwards. however, if this happens, you can simply run letterboxed 16:9 on the thing while gaming. The high resolution would still be amazing while browsing on the desktop. The black bars while gaming would be so minimal, since 16:9 and 16.10 are so close to each other.

There are inherent problems with buying a CRT today.
Those CRTs you are talking about are 400$ and cost 200$ in shipping due to their 100lb weight.
Also they weigh 100lbs and my desk is 11 years old and made of particle or fiberboard.
With that said I'd still love to have one but...you basically HAVE to buy one locally...I'm not sure that's possible for me.
And the damned things are so rarified and old...it just don't think it's a good idea to go that route again.
Having one is awesome....but getting/buying one...does not seem feasable...not in 2011.

120hz IPS panels? That sounds awesome. I wonder how bad the prices will be at first....and then a year after that.
