Asus vs Creative control software - Page 2

I tried a fatality and an old sound blaster live. Neither would work on my machine. I tried EVERYTHING to make the fatality work. Nada.

So I bought a Xonar DX. I'm hoping the drivers will load with no problem.

Holding my breath.

You really can t compare the ASUS so called software and the Creative one.

With Creative you have 2 real distinct modes of usage : the Gaming and Audio Creation Mode.
The Audio Creation mode really sounds great with ASIO .The advanced EQ is also a nice feature.
Then you have the gaming one with CMSS ,that Crystalizer thing , a real EQ ,LFE Filter and so on.And strangely all seem to do something

With Asus you have some buttons that don t seem to do nothing ,the CMSS like feature doesn t seem to work in XP and in W7 it simply adds some environment to the sound ,making the music sound like coming from a bottle.
The equalizer starts distorting the sound once you move the sliders from the default.
The LFE filter also doesn t seem to work for me.Usable for music only with ASIO.
Good hardware (D1 ,DX and up) ,even if it s based on a 2004 chip ,but crap software.

Maybe I'm stupid, but I'm not seeing the advantage of having to switch to different audio "modes" just to get different options. I agree Creative's EQ is better (though ASUS's does work), but otherwise they're pretty similar and have their own Pros and Cons.

The "CMSS like feature" you're referring to, Dolby Headphone (or maybe Dolby Virtual Speaker) isn't meant for music, it's meant for gaming, and it works fine for virtual 3D audio.

The modes have some advantages as they optimize some Creative components and resources for their specific purposes.

I don t like the way the Virtual Speaker thing works ,even if it s intended for gaming only as you say.

And if it s not intended for music ,it s even more disappointing as the CMSS can do this and up-mix the sound from 2 channel audio to the channels you have unused in a multichannel config ,without "mutating" the sound.
We also need to say that Q-Sound has some advantages regarding virtualization over the C-Media/Asus stuff as well. But not many try to use Q-Sound tech to reaplace the "lost" Sensaura algorithms.

In case you did not know the ASUS interface generates some DPC latency issues with ASIO as well.It s far from perfect or useful.
Carved Inside ,the guy that makes the unified drivers for ASUS sound cards ,has struggled a lot to fix that latency.

And comparing the panels esthetically you can go to the same conclusion , Creative > ASUS.

Asus really needs to learn from Creative , at least in the interface design business ,even if Creative has it s weak points and they are slow in driver development as well.

When it comes to offered features the Creative Panel is superior.

I m not saying that Xonar series is bad ,but the software really could of been better in most areas.
To bad we don t have a KX like driver team for Xonars.

My only complaint is that I CAN NOT get a fatality card to be recognized on my system. I tried every forum advice I could find. And even started a thread. And nothing worked. I gave up.

I'm switching to Xonar simply because I need something that will load. I'm at my wits end. I just want a sound card to listen to music, tv and movies on. I don't even game. But I heard these cards have great sound. So instead of trying to monkey rig my old sound blaster live. I figured I would give these top of the line cards (at least in affordability) a try.

I just hope the Xonar loads. But I've heard horror stories about those two. It's split about 50/50 on neweggs customer review. Of those that could get it to load and those that couldn't. So we'll see.

Maybe I'm looking at the wrong cards. And need to find something else that will load for sure.

EDIT: Sorry I didn't mean to hijack my own thread. But even given the differences. If you have no choice cause one won't load. What are you going to do? LOL!

You may have a problem with the motherboard.
You should report to Gigabyte the problem to eb researched.
I ve seen some chipset combinations like the one you have that may refuse to work with some sound cards or network cards.

The "prioritize components" sounds like marketing bull****. It's neat for the average user to switch between modes, but there should be an advanced option to utilize all features at once.
The rest of your points are more speculation than anything, and I won't say I disagree on all of them. I did like the Creative console, but it's not perfect and more importantly, it's not stable (at least on the X-fi Titanium).

So your saying that Creative and Xonar sound cards may not work with Gigabyte motherboards?

I've tried contacting Gigabyte before and it was a call back days later from someone I couldn't understand.

Anyone else running Xonar on a Gigabyte board? Sheesh. I just want a good sound card in my system. What does a guy have to do? LOL!

I am running and have run a Xonar and a Titanium HD on two different Gigabyte boards without any problems or conflicts whatsoever.

I ran an X-Meridian 2G along side the X-Fi Titanium Fatality and the Titanium HD without issue either.

Ya. I don't know what was wrong with this fatality that I had. Could be that it was because it was recert from Frye's. But who knows. I couldn't afford the full on fatality anyway. The DX is more in my price range. And I really just want good music. So Hopefully it will load with no problems come Tuesday.
