honest chances of unlocking a x2 555 and it running stable? - Page 2

It can be dependent on some motherboards. My board let's me unlock all 4 cores, while my friend has a 555 that can only unlock to 3 cores on my board, while we can only run it as a dual on his.

He has this board: linky

Also, his dual/tri-core does not OC as well as mine does. My quad does 4ghz on 1.45v while he can't even reach 4ghz at 1.5v. Not much point OCing past 3.8ghz if you're at 1.45v though.

I was only able to unlock one core on mine.

It is both CPU and board dependant.
I have a 555 that I can't unlock on my board, but the person I bought the CPU from had it running as an x3 @ 3.8 (and as an x4, but unstable at stock clocks).
I also had a Sempron 140 that would not unlock at all on 1 board, only unlocked sometimes on another, I sold it and the buyer unlocked and overclocked it stable on his.

This whole unlock thing depends on 4 things;

Firstly and mostly on the CPU, second is the board, third is the bios revision, and even memory type that matters in some cases.

We had tested lots of x2 550-555-560 CPU's and i would say that the x2 550 has
the best % chance for unlocking, from 10/5 cpu's unlocked fully.

But be aware that there are some x2 cpu's that work fine as x4 on ASrock boards, but when you put it in an asus it wont even start, same things can happen with gigabyte, msi, biostar etc...vice-versa.

Not only the locked cores can be faulty, but the integrated memory controller also can.

We had lots of x2 cpu's that couldn't be unlocked by any mobo with ddr3 memory on board.

But when we tested these on mobo's with ddr2 instolled, some of them unlocked fully, a few were unlocked but not stable.

This is a very hard thing to figure out, you need pure luck, or you can find someone who is selling pretested cpu's

Sry about the bad language but i'm not englishD Hope you understand what i was trying to tell you

Hmm, interesting on the memory controller. I had 2 identical gigbyte boards, but one was AM2+ (DDR2) and one was AM3 (DDR3), and the Sempron unlocked on 1 board but not the other.
My 555 is on an AM3 board (and won't unlock), but the previous owner had an AM2+ board (and unlocked to an x3).

I'd just buy the quad, not worth the hassle. I'd say 50/50 chance, and then cut that in half for it being stable, especially with a decent overclock. It is really a bummer when you get one that doesn't unlock and you have to go through all the work of sending it back, or, using it as only a dual. Had that happen, and in the end I got a real 955, and it resulted in costing me more money with shipping and everything, and a bunch of my time. That has been my experience with it. If you need a quad, get a quad. But it is fun to tinker with, if that is your goal...

But something that may be worth noting: The 555 overclocked really well with two cores, and it ran amazingly cooler than my 955, which has a custom loop, and the 555 only had an h50 cooling it at 4.3Ghz.
