Best way to connect my computer to my receiver? Upgrade?

Thread Starter
I recently got a Yamaha RX-797 receiver (stereo, analog, no digital inputs at all http://usa.yamaha.com/products/audio-visual/hifi-components/stereo-receivers/rx-797_black__u/?mode=model) and currently the sound card in my sig (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829102163).

What is the best way to connect these two OR should I upgrade my soundcard OR should I buy an external DAC? confused.gif

I am an audiophile I guess, and I listen to electronic, jazz and pop FLACs a lot. I don't play games on this computer, but I do watch movies on it (though I am obviously okay with not having 5.1 for movies.)

If I upgrade my sound card or buy a DAC I need one that is 100% linux compatible, but I don't need one that can drive headphones, has more than stereo output, or even has a volume control. The receiver acts as my headphone amp when I am using headphones. Wouldn't want to spend too much more than a couple hundred dollars.

the best way imo (cost to performance) would be to get a soundcard with amped RCA output

Why would it need to be amped?

3.5MM to RCA
or if your motherboard or sound card supports it optical cable

and no need to be amped, your receiver should already amp it and everything

My receiver doesn't have an optical input. It has no digital inputs of any kind. It is purely analog.

So I guess the question is: do I need to upgrade to an external DAC or better soundcard or not?

I am watching this, as I have the same problem. I have a 3.5mm to RCA, which works. But I get a humming noise when I have my HTPC hook up to the receiver. Even when the HTPC isnt turned on.

I am using onboard audio. And The receiver is an Hardon/Karman AVII, which is all analog.

I ended up buying an Audio GD NFB-12. It does sound better than my soundblaster, though I am still using the SB to do digital output to it.

I just got these to replace my small infinity speaker satellites and they're ABOVE AMAZING. They're on sale if you have a local place near you for 47 a pop.
