Future Project - Monster.

Hey all, just here to upgrade my PC due to the fact that I just want to have a killer PC and get all the new hardware if you know what I mean.

Currently my PC:
CPU - Intel i7 870 (NO OC)
RAM - DDR3 - 2000 (4 x 2gb)
CASE - Cooler Master HAF 932
PSU - thermaltake 750W (no complaints, very quiet)
MB - Gigabyte UD3
HDD - 1TB (Brand doesnt matter)
GFX Card - Ati Radeon 5850 (XFX Edition)
--I also have some nice blue LED's with the "new" *Sleeved LED*. (IMO, it is absoutly amazing, lights my case up like a x-mas tree.)

Onto my future build: Monster.
CPU - i7 970 (cheapest 6-core) [http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...&Tpk=i7%20970]

CASE - **I do not know, I'm debating about the HAF X but its just the fan customization is no where close to the HAF 932, but it has 10 PCI slots. (Recommend me 1 with 9-10 slots please) http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16811119225

GFX Card - Amd 6990, [I was amazed at how it beat the Asus Ares 5870 X2.] http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16814150529

PSU - http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...882&CatId=5115

MBoard - EVGA X58 Classified (preferably E-762) http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...741&CatId=4070

RAM - Rip Jaws (3 x 4GB) http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16820231358

Total - About 2700. (CAD)

[If I get a new monitor, whats the best one (considering price as well) ?

Thanks all, share recommendations, comments, and such

Nice, but migth I suggest you go for the second gen i7, better and for less money, also, have in mind it´s a new socket (yet again) 1155 so you will have to choose another mobo aswell.

Looks like you have a similar setup to me , why the upgrade ? have u though about overclocking the cpu ?

to be honest i dont see you getting much improvement over the 870 if your just gaming .

Get the 6990 and wait for ivy bridge before you buy a new mobo and cpu .. waste of money going from an 870 to a 970 imo unless you do rendering or heavy cpu work you wont notice the difference at all .

overclock the cpu to 4.2 and get the 6990 , thats about as good as it gets .. a new cpu isnt going to help , neither will the ram ..

the x58 is good for xfire though , ud3 is restricted to one 16x lane . But if your not going xfire , theres really no point to upgrade , the amount your going to pay is just not worth the tiny ( if any ) increase in performance .

id wait for ivy

thats what i reckon anyway .

What do you mean by Ivy? I've heard that i9's are in progress, explain ivy?

No those are still 1st gen, the second gen ones are (in i7) the 2600 and 2600k Socket 1155.

Aren't those for servers?
the i7 2600/2600k are desktop cpu, not servers. Intel has their own Server incarnation.

the i5 2500K can be had for $100 less than the 2600k for $220 average, and is probably a better buy than the i7 970.

the difference in K(unlock multipliers) vs non-K(locked multipliers) is the ability to overclock and totally worth it for $20-30 more.

the main difference in 2600k vs 2500k is the hyperthreading which does not matter much in gaming, only encoding videos etc.

So the 2600K is a bang-for-your-buck?

Thanks a lot, i never new of these processors, i just went for the 1st generations.
2600K is 300 dollars less than the i7 970, thanks alot for that; Now i can buy the fatal1ty sound card without worries of money shortage
Here's the list now:
intel 2600K - 310.00
HAF X - 189.99
AMD 6990 - 739.99
Fatil1ty - 109.99
x58 classified - 379.99
RipJaes 2x4gb - 149.99
1600W PSU - 320.00

TOTAL - 2400.00 (HST is gonna kill me) [I live in BC]

Thanks all, just a question, what case should i choose besides the HAF X? In my main post, I said I dont like it too much due to you cant customize the fans too well unlike the HAF 932. But I NEED a case with more than 6 PCI slots to fit everything, and for future. Suggestions?

Aswell, what monitor should I choose? I'm still running a cruddy VGA at the moment

If you are going to switch to the 2600K, the x58 is not compatible. EVGA is releasing their new line of mobos for sandy bridge(a bit late I might add,) and they are quite nice looking, and almost 150.00 cheaper than the x58. Otherwise, you can actually get a z68(1155,) for under 200, which is even more of a saving. good luck!
