Phenom II 955 vs SnB i3 2100

I want to build a HTPC for family to play HD and some racing games. I'm wondering how hot is phenom 955, what is it regular temp in DF? also is i3? I would prefer AMD because it's cheaper, 4 cores and great at HD and gaming, but I'm worried about its tempeture. Thank you.

The phenoms have lower higher temp caps?

I'd go with the i3. It performs just as good as the Phenom II X4 in many cases that don't need 4 cores (even then, it's pretty fast). Having had a 955 in the past, I must say you will want an aftermarket heatsink. The one it comes with isn't sufficient for anything on a CPU load, and is loud.

The case also comes into play with temperature... what case were you considering?

Note that pairing the Phenom II x4 955 with AM3+ will give you better expandability options that may be affordable; the 955 can OC when you want it to. Using the i3 2100 on LGA1155, for ANY boost in performance (2100 does not OC) you will have to either buy a significantly more expensive K processor or wait for Ivy Bridge which will not be out until March-April of 2012.

Note that for gaming, on most games the CPU will make little difference esp. compared to the GPU. The 955 should also win in games that are more/properly multithreaded such as GTA IV, true cores always win over HyperThreaded ones.

I'm not gonna use this PC to play games a lot , Mostly for HD movies, racing games and NBA, I'm have my own gaming pc already ^^. I created this topic to know that how high is that phenom 955's tempeture ? But i guess it's gonna around 40-50oC

the phenoms temps are fine. I had a 965 before, and (with good case cooling) the temp never exceeded 45c clocked to about 3,8.

You can also get an msi board and get active phase switching, automatically clocking down the multiplier when the cpus power isn't needed, using both less power and will keep it very cool when idle or watching movies.

955~
With a decent cooler and good airflow in your case, your temps should be between 23c and 30c idle at stock clocks (with Speedstep and Cool'n'Quite disabled, with those power-saving features enabled, you can expect <23c), as you'll be using it for light gaming and movie playback, you shouldn't see your temps exceed 32-37c at the very most peak usage, I'd imagine.
Ultimately it depends on your ambient room temperature, and case airflow.

I can't speculate the i3's temperatures, as I don't know, I'm afraid.

955, absolutely. Temperature isn't a big issue even with the stock cooler unless you're doing a pretty sizeable overclock.

I'm biased as hell, but really it's a great chip.

Which one can you get cheaper? The i3 is sufficient for an HTPC that also does occasional gaming.

Depending on the case you use, the Phenom might not experience the temperature issues you are concerned about.
