what to buy..... OCZ or Intel?

Hey guys, im looking to buy my first SSD and would like some advice on what to buy. I have pretty much limited down to either OCZ or intel. I have pretty determined that I would need no less then a 160gb for all my work related programs and some current games that I play and I think i would have trouble keeping 20% free space on a 120gb. (currently 2x 150gb Xraptors)

I am going to be using this on my 3 year+ m2n32 sli deluxe on a nforce MCP 590 chipset which I found out that it does not Support AHCI but the raid controller supports AHCI. Not sure if it's true but I have heard that the OCZ drives are very picky about having AHCI enabled in order to update the fimware. Would have have problems updating the drive if it's not running in AHCI? I know that performance will suffer a bit not running in AHCI.

I have hared a lot of horror stories about some of the OCZ drives burning out very quickly versus other SSD's. I would like to hear some other opinions and experiences on this

The 2 models i'm looking at would be the OCZ agility/vertex2 and the Intel 320 series. as much as i would like to get a sata 3 drive for a future board, it seems like the cost per GB is quite high versus the older sata 2's and the only option larger then a 128gb is a 256gb.

If anyone would like to share their experiences with their SSD's or has any other recommendations or suggestions feel free to list them.

thx in advance

The new Intel series are no joke.
Not sure where you have been reading about the OCZ's burning out or whatever.
Maybe their old drives but I haven't heard any bad things about their new ones.
But if I was you, I'd go for the newer Intel drives.

Love my OCZ Vertex 2. Well worth the money a year ago.

If you ever start looking for a SATA 6Gb/s, the Corsair Force 3 are supposed to be beasts with 550 Mb/s read and 510 Mb/s write (that's according to Corsair though).

Good luck with your purchase!

Thanks for all the replies so far

As much as i would like a sata6 drive for a future board, there seems to be nothing between 128 and 256gb atm, and the pricing of the older sata3 160/180gb drives are too good to pass up.

Don't know but I have heard a lot of horror stories about OCZ's drives having a high failure rate and not to mention a lot of unhappy ppl that purchased 25nm drives which had less space and underperformed versus their 34nm counterparts.

I have been reading reviews both Intel and OCZ drives and I am having trouble finding out the difference between the Vertex2 and the Agility2 series....

Considered Crucial SSDs?
hello mate, i'm running a m2n32sli deluxe also and recently bought a corsair F60 (basically the same ocz vert2) and have the problem that everything installed fine, and it runs fast, but after two or three hours the system freezes. alternatively i can boot the system and copy say 20Gb of files to the new drive and it happens after only a few minutes. so it appears there's a clogging somewhere in the new SSD. have tried various things, reg edit to enable ahci etc but still nothing.
i'm a complete novice when it comes to raid, never done it. gonna attempt a firmware update in a mo, but failing that can you tell me about raid. i take it i just grab the controllers off asus website and you say they include ahci drivers in them is that right??
but yeah, you're right, this mobo's a wee bit old(!) now for ahci support

The OCZ Vertex3 and Agility3 are great better than the 2's by far.

Loving my new Crucial M4, C300 is doing great in my htpc.

I've had several problems out of OCZ lately. Including screwing me on a Vertex I rma'd. Replacement doesn't perform 2/3's as well as the original. It's quite obvious that they changed it to the under performing 25nm nand. Even the casing is different from the original.

You should also take a look at the new Corsair's as well.
