what to buy..... OCZ or Intel? - Page 2

I would normally just recommend the OCZ Vertex 3 for its speed but current problems deter me from recommending it, unless you get it with 2.02 firmware (original) and do NOT upgrade to 2.06. Then perhaps you'll be quite happy, provided you don't get one that's borked-from-factory (seems to have a high probability at this time). I hear Intel SSDs are very reliable and durable so why not go for a 510!?

has anyone got any suggestions for my problem?
i also have an asus M2N32 SLI deluxe mobo that does not support ahci in the bios. the drive runs smoothly and quickly but also quickly seems to get 'clogged' with data. if i transfer large files or run a bench mark (atto) then the drive freezes up and the system crashes.
i'm gutted as i really want to run this drive. tried enabling ahci with msfix and tried different drivers. can't update firmware because the update program doesn't even see the drive.
any help would much apreciated

It's really had to buy a bad SSD now.

Intel
C300
Crucial M4
Vertex (1,2,3)

The Newegg reviews are horrible on the Vertex SSD's. Is the failure rate really that high with these OCZ drives or is it typical Newegg PEBKAC?

Thanks for the input everyone. After much time and research, I ordered the 160GB Intel 320 off the egg for $284. To anyone buying one, I wouldn't go off the darn reviews off the egg, I swear, I seen one guy said that he actually defrag'd his SSD I would stick to trusted sites and the OCN community.

i'm a complete novice when it comes to raid, never done it. gonna attempt a firmware update in a mo, but failing that can you tell me about raid. i take it i just grab the controllers off asus website and you say they include ahci drivers in them is that right??
but yeah, you're right, this mobo's a wee bit old(!) now for ahci support
From what I have been told, the silicon image SATA controller on the m2n32-SLI deluxe which is the Nforce MCP 590, does not support AHCI. The 570 MCP, (m2n-SLI deluxe) on the other hand supports AHCI because it uses the Jmicron SATA controller and from what I hear, the Jmicron controller is better then the silicon image controller

BTW , you might want to checkout the Club here on OCN for our motherboard. We got folks like myself running solid AM3 Phenoms like the 955-975 on our boards which requires some workarounds to get working.

The Agility 3 and Vertex 3 are to be avoided at all costs right now. SSDs with the SandForce SF-2200 controller are having major issues with BSODs and disappearing from BIOS. Corsair has recalled their Force 3 drives. OCZ tech support is suggesting procedures bordering on voodoo. Virgin sacrifice, anyone?

Wicked fast means nothing when you spend all your time in the pits with the hood up. That's the state of the SandForce drives right now.

LOL, too true. I'm due to receive my RMA replacement for my Vertex 3. I don't think I have the heart to take it out of the box and test it because I expect the problem to creep up. You say you returned your OCZ drive for a refund and bought an Intel 510 drive. Disregarding OCZ's problems, is the performance of Intel's 510 drive on par?

I haven't done any benchmarking, but to my untrained eye it seems just as fast.

That's why I was so torn as I tried to decide what to do. In many published reviews, the SandForce drives blew away the competition in test after test. When it came down to reliability, though, the editors chose other drives.

The extras also put Intel out in front for me. The kit included a 3.5" bracket for desktop installs, and the Intel toolkit checks your settings to maximize the drive's performance. The OCZ toolkit flashes firmware or erases, that's it. And if your drive is a system drive, it does nothing at all.

stay away from OCZ.

I wasnt too impressed with the spotty reviews on the vertex 2 and the less than stellar customer service ocz seems to offer.

In light of all the crazy stuff going on with the vertex 3 i am so glad I went intel 510 ... it's a great drive.

Sounds good - the untrained eye is what I'm looking for. Benchmarks are just bragging rights when it comes to something that is already "plenty fast" (like SSDs). The Vertex 3 comes with the 3.5" bracket for desktop installs but I agree, the OCZ Toolbox is a piece of junk.

Tony from OCZ has confirmed the following after some threats of refunds:

I guess by "not for all" he means AMD systems are currently still affected (given that they've taken a deep look at Intel RST drivers by the sounds of it).
