Need Help Picking Out Parts

Thread Starter
Hello, I'm going to college in the fall, and I'm planning on building myself a nice gaming desktop to keep in my dorm, and getting an average laptop to take to classes with me. I have about $1500 from graduation party money to spend, so that would be my budget. I'm not very good with picking out parts and compatability and stuff, but my brother said he would help me put everything together, so building it won't be a problem. I also don't plan on overclocking, and I'll be using to computer to play games such as WoW, Starcraft, and I'm hoping it will be able to run SWTOR well when it comes out.
Could anyone help me get the best bang for my buck when picking out good gaming parts, but still saving enough money for a laptop? I'm not very picky about the laptop, I'll just be using it for word processing, web browsing, etc.

I also need a monitor, preferably one with 1920x1080 resolution and a copy of windows 7 which I think is $100 for an OEM version, so those costs will need to be factored in as well.

Thanks for any help you guys can give.

Thanks for the reply, I'll look into those parts you listed.

That's a really nice build, personally I'd want to run with a 2500k/UD3, I'd also replace the hyper 212 with a corsair h100 when it comes out in a few weeks but all of this will cost you a little extra.

I'd also watch out for open box graphics cards, there was a 580 for $300 today, but to be honest with those games you won't need much to run at 1080p, a 560 ti ($187 open box) would be plenty. Not sure about what SWTOR will require.

You could save money by getting a haf 912 case instead, but it's not my style. You'll also need a power supply, the corsair builder 600 is a reasonable deal, but depending on your choice of gpu you might want something more beefy.

You can also knock a big part of the cost of windows by going through your college. Microsoft has deals for students, and will often either give it for free or a very serious discount. (I paid 35 bucks for my two copies, and will get it for free next year at the University.)

Edit: Most of the time, all they need is your new school email address confirmed. So if you have registered and are all signed up, you should have one by now.

I thought I'd get a rep... Looks like my mistake, as for the 2500/2600k it was my initial decision but it cost too much when I tried to put in a good video card
