RAID, my CPU, and no controller

Thread Starter
I read the RAID sticky, and am still unsure what to do. I will soon have 3 of my 2TB hard drives. I don't want to do RAID 0 with 3 drives, and RAID 1 is out of the question due to space getting cut in half. I want protection so that if one drives fails I'm ok, but still get full performance. With my top end CPU and Mobo, what's my best option, RAID 5 or 10? I refuse to buy a controller (would I really even need one?).

Another question, whats my best option with say, 4 drives?

I wouldn't put my trust in onboard RAID. Too many horror stories on OCN about how people have trusted it and it fails and they loose their stuff.

So RAID 5 with my specs isn't a good idea? I don't care if speed isn't optimal, and I know the Samsung drives work well in RAID normally.

That's not what I'm saying.
I'm saying onboard RAID sucks vs having a card dedicated to RAID.
If your RAID array fails, (which it will) then you will loose your stuff.
I doubt you want that to happen.

its best to have a card if you want 100% protection. if your onboard raid chip dies, then you will need an identical board with the identical raid chip to recover the data, and thats not always guaranteed. if you buy a card then you will always have the same raid chip. if that makes sense... if you want protection AND speed, i would get 4 drives and raid 10/raid 1+0

I am currently using an on-board raid card for the past 5 months so far and I haven't had any issues with it.

Granted I don't use this hard drive for anything important and just games that I could re-download if I needed to.

If RAID1 isn't an option then RAID10 isn't an option either - you still lose 50%.

If a RAID card isn't an option, is a media/file server an option (old rig lying around?)? Running RAID5 (or 6, or Z or Z2) is an option under *nix (FreeNAS, Openfiler, Amahi), or use selective file duplication (Amahi, WHS) or non-striped parity (unRAID, FlexRAID).
