No they are not. Rome is vastly more manageable and Shogun II is more intuitive. Empire tried to do too much and overwhelmed all but the most hardcore players.

Like anything, everyone is going to have their favs. To some, SC II didn't live up to their expectations and to others, it was too far removed from the original. Others love it to death... For me, I just couldn't get in to it...

Once you start playing RTS's you will find your genre and then you will have your favs

First two (Supcom and forged alliance) did absolutely, but even then half of them are variations of a tank. Supcom 2 wasn't so bad, 1 of each unit rather than 3 and a few experimentals for each race.

I wasn't saying starcraft was too complicated, just that with supcom you start off with a basic idea of what each unit does which is absent from starcraft (Tanks > Bots > Arty > Tanks). Starcraft's descriptions are terrible; they tell you the attack name without giving any idea whatsoever what the attack DOES.

I like supcom's micro better, build queues are win, and why doesn't every RTS allow you to zoom all the way out to see the entire map? I didn't realize this was a "feature"...

good times... I love how you can queue virtually everything in the game... repeat build factories, then have transports assist the factories, and pick a point close to the front where u wish to have them delivered.

Since it hasn't been suggested:

Earth 2150

I would recommend AI war but that game to me seems to hard core to jump into it.

I tried playing Napolean: Total War, the campaign. I was constantly shouting WHY AREN'T YOU SHOOTING? WHY ARE YOU STANDING IN FRONT OF THE CANNON? AGH!

Then I carefully built myself up, slowly expanding into new territories. Then I took my first city, after lots of building up and territory capture. I was joyous.

Then I saw that I had 5 turns left, and ten more towns to take. "[expletive] this game!" was all I could say before I uninstalled it :|

Starcraft 2, but only the custom games. I seriously cannot handle the units and "anti-unit" based battles. Its seriously hit or miss with that.

If you have played other Total War games, then you know the other clans always acted a bit irrational in attacking you and diplomacy. They act alot better now, i'm always able to maintain alliances with clans(even ones I have borders with) for long periods of time. And the upgrades aren't bad, I just set out a strategy about how i'll upgrade the clan based on there strengths.

With conquering to fast or to slow, you can do it to slow and run out of time to win the game(less turns in Shogun then the other ones I believe). I prefer initially conquering at a fast pace and then slowing down a bit later in the game. That way I can decimate all my surrounding neighbors before they can build up significant strength.
