MSI GTX 580 lightning sli with Direct CU ii,some pre purchase concerns

I have an asus direct CUii gtx 580.Its a fantastic card, ive been able to easily oc it to 900+ with minor voltage bumps and all of that.I only have a 1080p monitor but still want to go sli because i can.My question is that after a lot of reading around ive read msi custom cooler cards in sli are a bad idea because of top card temps etc.I want to know if u think with the CUii at the bottom and the lightning at the top,if its going to be a huge issue as far as temps are concerned.I have decent airflow, even a 200mm inside the case sitting on the HDD cages blowing right at the GPUs,cu ii temps under load never exceed 65C.Anyway,if there is anyone with this configuration, your experience with it would really help, cheers,

Another thing id like opinions on is,the cuii HAS to be at the bottom because of my p67 mobo and its huge 3 slotted backside,so whatever other card i buy will have to be on top!Now with that in mind, wont a cooler like the twin frozr do a better job with the warm air it has to work with as compared to a reference card.Just wanted to make sure ref card on top is a bad idea

I wouldn't say that reference on top is a bad idea just that a aftermarket cooler would be better. I've had experience with both the Lightning and the DCII (my previous 570 was a DCII) and in my experience the Lightning is slightly louder, so what I would recommend is actually putting the DCII on top and the Lightning on the bottom so that the Lightning would run cooler and therefore quieter than if it were on top. I beleive this way the noise levels of both will be more even. You can fit this on your P8P67 Pro unless you are using other add-on cards. The DCII takes up a full 3 slots but the fans are slightly recessed from the shroud so I wouldn't worry about it being starved for air personally. I would install the DCII in the top and gently lift it up before tightening it's screws, and then let the Lightning naturally hang where it wants to without adjusting it, this should give you and extra 2-3mm gap but like I said I personally wouldn't be worried about the DCII being starved and not performing.

Id think wherever the cooler air goes first is where the ref card should be as it wouldnt get the warmer air from the CU2 card. My non air evac cards kinda suck in SLI as far as air circulation as my least used card is the hottest :/

Nothing wrong with going with another DCII. There are a few people on OCN with it, and not one has reported that the lack of space messes with the top card's temps or noise. But yes, a solid custom cooler is going to be a lot more effective than a reference card. Reference cards don't do well with warmer air.

As a general rule of thumb, you should have one slot of space between the top and bottom cards (accounting for the thickness of cooling solution).

Aftermarket coolers usually blow the hot air into your case while reference cards don't so the best solution would be reference on the bottom, aftermarket on top.

Depends entirely on the spacing.

If they are 3 slot cards then no matter which is on the top, it will be suffocated.

Best bet with sli would be 1 reference direct exhaust card installed on top.

EDIT> Looks the the Lightning is a dual slot card, why not sli 2 of those?

The setup you're proposing is going to work fine. No, I'd not get a reference card for the top slot.

If you COULD put the DCII in the top slot, and then have a reference card in the bottom, with a space in between them, that would probably be the optimum setup for temps.

But since that's not an option, the next best thing would be what you're talking about.

i considered that but the thing is i originally bought a galaxy gtx 570 then returned it and the best option i had was the direct cuII 580 so i got it.I COULD sell it and get another msli lightning for the other slot as well but thats too much of a hassle and id probably loose more money to save a pci slot for a sound card im probably never going to get as i find the onboard 5.1 on the p8p67 pro more than adequate. So i guess im going to get a lightning for now and sli with the CUII at the bottom and the msi lightning on top!
