Reinvention of dead technology for the win. FYI, I have one of those on my laptop. These guys are 5 years late.

I don't see anything wrong with my current optical drive...

^ Agreed. My large and now apparently old school tray-loading drive suits me just fine.

The only reason I even bought an optical drive for my system is because it was dirt cheap, if the thing ever died on be I'd toss it off to the side and not even give a second thought to ordering a new one.

Really? I install large games with my drive. At least for me, or perhaps Canadians, bandwidth is something to keep an eye on every week.

I don't know if this was mentioned, or if there's an easy solution to it, but I was wondering about forced manual eject (If it gets stuck for whatever reason, or like me you use to store some disks in old drives and keep the drive in your closet)

Yours most likely isn't 5.25" though, probably smaller. Might be all right for people who want to save more space I guess.

Nice I suppose. I don't like the idea of slot-loading drives, never sat well with me.

I'll keep my oversized tray loading ones, thank you very much.

Flash drive here, although I will take that network drive suggestion to heart for the sake of simultaneous, hopefully unintended installs.

I see why a slimmer drive can help, especially since it will allow the installation of USB/Thunderbolt/audio/eSATA/etc boxes above them within the same space occupied by current optical drives. Hopefully they'll make brackets that can house both these shorter optical drives and the multi-card readers and/or onboard connector boxes to prevent the need to upgrade your case.

Still, I would rather they increase optical disc capabilities. Bluray is slowly being outclassed in capacity, portability, and ease of use by flash drives as we speak.

I still prefer trays, more conventional and there's a fail-safe hole to push if drive fails to eject disc. I can already hear people a CDFreaks freak out if slot loading became a standard. Scratched discs galore.
