[Anand] Meet the New 5.25" Optical Drive Standard: Slimmer, Slot-loading - Page 9

You don't just come out and say "This is the new standard"

It happens over time, by itself.

3.5" form factor blue ray density. That would be sweet.
I don't see this happening, 5.25 inch bays have become such a standard that everything in your pc is designed around it, from the size of you PSU to heatsinks to PCI-e card sizes. Would be pointless to make a smaller drive if the width of the case needs to stay the same. PC cases would have to be totally redesigned. When liquid cooling becomes better and more inexpensive, I can see making smaller drives more useful, but until heatsinks and PSUs get smaller, whats the point?

Halfheight is sort of neat, but I wont be rushing out to spent 60 dollars on a new optical drive that I only use to rip audio cds to my pc. I cant think of the last time I've used my dvd-rom for a actual game or software installation.

I'm honestly surprised that they did not take the logical step of just using laptop-sized optical disk drives with an adapter. Heck, it'd be cheaper to make, fit a whole lot better, and not end up causing some abomination of a "standard".

Ah well, optical disks are dying, anyways.

The one thing I want from drive manufacturers is better reliability.

The vast majority of disc drives I have ever dealt with have died. Horribly.

I can't wait till moving parts are all gone. Slot-loading flash memory needs to be standard.
Why not just throw media on cheap thumbdrives instead?

Aren't small ones cheap as hell now. I am sure you can get a dvd sized one for some loose change.

i actually always wondered why the optical drives where soooo big..

they're small in laptops.. discman (even though you rarely see them) are alot smaller..

it is in fact probably the least developed area on the computer (design-wise?) and how cool is it, to have a brushed alu case, when theres a matte black plastic optical drive ruining it all?

this will be alot easier to mod, look cooler in general, and ... take less space!

does mean we either need new cases or to mod them anyway to prevent that gab its gonna leave, if its thinner

i approve of this!
get them on the market!

So how can this be a standard if it's slimmer than the standard now ?

For this to be a standard all cases will need to have the bay's height re-designed and those that don't will need an adapter to have it fit the 5.25 bay.

this is the way to go:

Meh.

The computer I put together for college back in 2001 had a slot loading DVD drive. The only thing different here is that the drives are half height. If they can make the drives perform the same or better at half height then I'm fine with it, otherwise who is this helping? Low profile HTPC's and people who do at home disc duplication. Otherwise a totally unnecessary product.

Also, its much harder to get a disc out of a slot loader when it jams or the release mechanism fails.

Actually no, they do come and "just say this is the new standard". There are bodies made up of the major manufacturers that get together and decide on these new standards. Different bodies for different things. You think the current 5.25" bay is an accident? You think there were manufacturers out there making 6", 5.5", 5" etc. until one won out?
