HD 5850 toasted ?

Hi. I think my card has died.

I've recently started to have bluescreens when playing games that used to work very well (Left 4 Dead II, Bad Cie 2, Crysis Warhead) It is even difficult to reboot because it often crashes at windows startup (Early bluescreen when loading windows) or fails to display anything else than a flashing cursor (Top left corner of the screen) when booting.

I've reformatted my HD then re-installed windows because I was suspecting a driver issue.

Same behavior once with a fresh clean Win 7. I'm having bluscreen even when opening images right after having re-installed windows with default drivers. I never had temp issues, in fact the card was running very cool even when overclocked at 810. Is there anything i could try in order determine if the card is broken ?

re seat the GPU.

Have you got a spare you could try just to make sure it's the 5850?

Yeah, this doesn't sound too promising (I'm assuming you already reseated the card considering all these issues, if not do it now) also if you have a crossfire/sli board, try it in the other slot.

I hate to say it, but your card is most likely toast or a $15 pci-express YouTube display card.

However, you may still be able to RMA it and get it repaired/or get a new one. Call Gigabyte, XFX, or whoever the hell makes it and see what's up.

If you have any other computers or friends with computers, you should try to see if it's the gpu.

Have you tried running everything at stock settings and maybe even just running 1 stick of ram?

I've already entered a ticket at sapphire.

I'm glad they have a 2 year warranty since I've bought that on October 2009.

Tonight I'll try to re seat the PGU and do some testing with one stick of ram.

Thanks.

Reset CPU to stock and try... most likely is the video card but it's still worth looking into other possibilities while you're able.

I've tried running CPU at 3.0 Ghz, reseated GPU, re-installed windows.

At the moment I've re-installed catalyst drivers BSOD was back again.

Any way, the card has been shipped for RMA process.

Who knows, maybe they'll send me back a cool HD 5850 Xtreme.

I've finally received a replacement card. I was first disappointed because this one was getting hot as hell and noisy until I replace the stock cooler by a zalman VF-1000.

This new card can reach 825 mhz without problem at stock voltage and all GPU temps remain below 50C and VRM temps below 84C when using Furmark.

I think I have a lot of headroom left on that card but...

Do you think I could have toasted my previous Sapphire 5850 by changing Voltage using afterburner ?

I can't stand the idea of leaving performance behind me but at the same time I don't want to live another RMA process anytime soon. Does anyone know someone who think he has killed his card by using afterburner voltage control ?

Could this potential risk be solved by flashing out the BIOS to a generic MSI 5850 BIOS ?

If you are worried about breaking it, you shouldnt be overclocking it.
