Baking a graphics card to make a keyring.

Thread Starter
Hello, today I felt like getting a new keyring, so I thought whats better than an NVIDIA keyring.

I have seen a couple of people do it before, so I tried it myself.
Basically, you leave the card in the oven until the processor falls out. And thats your keyring.

Anyway, now my whole house smells of plastic. I realized what an idiot I have been for doing this.

My question is, is there anything really harmfull in the graphics card that I should be really worried about?
I am getting worried now that I have unleashed some kind of poison gas. I know I am an idiot, but please help.

The card is Geforce Fx5200 AGP.

Open the house up and let it air out. As long as the PCB wasnt smoking and you were breathing the fumes you should be ok. Next time maybe try a heat gun and do it outside

Did you detach the card from the plastic casing before baking it? I think I would call a doctor to be honest, or the manufacturer of the card. Definitely open all your windows though to vent out the house, for the smell if nothing else.

The PCB was smoking like hell, as soon as it started to do so I turned it off and opened up all the windows.

I hope it wont be anything cancerous or anything like that.

And I doubt I will be doing anything like this again, it was fun but now the consequences.

@Waffleboy, it was just the PCB, i took the heatsink off. Probably should have snipped off the capacitors too.

I dont think the fumes are cancerous, on the other hand the fumes can be poisonous.

Apparently the fumes stick to the oven so make sure you clean it. If your not too happy to go and see a doctor, wait it out and see if you get ill. I doubt you will get ill though, unless you have ingested loads of the fumes.

I'm sure you will be fine!

On a side not did you get the chip off in the end?

Don't use that oven ever again.
Just kidding, but really clean it thoroughly. You really don't want any of the **** getting on your food.

I don't think you were supposed to turn the heat up that high... Solder usually melts at temperatures well below the point where things will burn. You didn't need to heat it to the point that it would smoke.

You need to relax. Unless you were huffing those fumes you have nothing to worry about. Some burning plastic is not going to kill you.
