SLI GTX 460s - Page 4

Thread Starter
thanks for the responses guys.
@brettjv
ya i just realized my bottom mounted psu will get in the way. even if the card somehow manages to fit in the bottom most slot, it is going to be super tight with only a few milimeters of wiggle room. do u think it would just be better to move it up one?or would that cause heat problems?

Edit: ya i just looked and if i move mount the cards in the circled slots, they will literally be right on top of eachother almost touching. it looks like i probably wont be able to fit them in the bottom most and top most slots because of my bottom mounted psu. ugh. wat do u guys think?

Smooth 60 fps in BC2 for my SLI 460. I only have one pci lane inbetween my 460's and both cards hover in the mid 70's without AC on (ambients ~31C). But then again, I do have a good cooling solution in DirectCU, can't speak for EVGA though! There are maybe 3-4mm separating my bottom 460 and my Essence STX sound card and it runs fine. Just make sure that nothing is actually grinding against the physical fan preventing it from spinning properly.

i have my 2 gtx 460 almost next to each other and as a previous poster said the top one was hotter even though there was more clearance. My computer is still in the thermal take v3 till Monday. Good airflow is essential. With it you could do mild over clock and still maintain good temps. You definitely won't regret getting another gtx 460. Good timing to buy too. Jewett recently had it for 120 the sc version.

I can confirm the Hawk is awesome. I have a second one on the way myself. Just thinking to myself though... this will be right at about $400 for the two 460s... hoping I did right with my money vs a single card setup.

460's are great for sli, one tip though if you are putting two cards next to each other is:

Remove all the brackets which cover blank pci slots at the back of the case.

When fitting the top card, make sure you try and gently hold the card upwards as much as you can without bending the pci connector and then fasten it in like that with a screw.

Then the bottom card, just allow it the hang once it's pushed into the pci slot with no screws to fastern it in, this will increase the gap took around 5-8 degrees off my top cards temps.

Also a side case fan blowing on them helps further.

Also just to note there is a slight performance drop when going from an x16 slot to an x8 slot however when I had my cards in a x16/x4 setup I only noticed an average of a 3-4 frames drop.

But doing this setup for some reason meant my long term overclock became unstable and I had to drop it down a step and I also noticed a kind of micro stuttering on any game/benchmark that just wasn't there in a x16/x16 setup.

Once you install the second gtx your gonna notice a huge difference. No micro stutter and it scales well to boot.

well you have 2 choices. mount both card next to each other like the picture u show and have the top card runs hot, or moun the bottom card next to PSU and have bottom card runs hot (not sure, just a guess, haven't try this config) if u mount the card near the PSU some front panel connectors might be block. check this wisely.

take note: next time please buy a decent motherboard with proper PCI-E slot spacing. i know i didn't think about this much and it use to plague me like crazy. good thing i've had this fixed.

Do it like I suggested ... Hawk on top, EE version on the bottom. I don't think you can use the bottom slot w/that case, so you're going to have a sandwich. Chobbit's advice is good too as there's usually a bit of 'wiggle room' that will allow the top one to be angled slightly upwards, and vice versa on the bottom card.

The Hawk has a very good cooler on it, so even with bad airflow it'll still work pretty decent. Probably end up w/both top and bottom about the same temps.

Just don't go crazy pouring on volts and OC'ing, make a custom fan profile, it should be very possible to keep 'em both under 85C. Also make sure you have the best possible airflow in the case. Worst case, upgrade your case fans if necessary to higher CFM models.
