Ok to use 4pin to 6pin adapters?

post #1 of 14
Thread Starter
I am going to purchase a 5830 which uses 2 x 6pin connectors. I am also purchasing a new power supply. The power supply that I'm looking at has 2 x 6pin PCIEs. Eventually I would like to set up crossfire with a second card though. Is there any difference between the PCIE connectors and the 4pin connectors (amp/voltage wise)? The power supply has plenty of power but only 2 PCIE connectors. Will there be any difference in performance if I use the adapters and plug 1 of the cards up to 2 peripheral connectors?

Wasn't sure if I should post this in the power supply area or here.....but here seemed like the most appropriate place.

The PC Power cables usually have similar Ampere on the Molex and the 6-Pin cables.
They send 2xPC Power -> 6-pin for a reason.

If you don't have any extra 6-pin, get a cheap 2xPC Power -> 6-pin adapter.

The card comes with single 4pin instead of a double....should I buy the double adapters instead?

A single PC Power? Never heard of that but if it runs and don't give any artifacts during full load I'd use it but my paranoia tells me it's equal to phases, the more the better

Thanks for the reply......maybe I'll just put a little more $$ into the power supply that I'm buying just to be done with it.

Thanks to the members here at OCN i purchased a HX850w, just arrived in courier and i can tell you now, compared to the thermaltake series....this power supply blows it out of the water for packaging quality and all around sturdy-ness, be interesting to see if its going to give me the need for hearing aids or not.

Corsair? Newegg doesn't have the HX 550 only the 650. I was kinda looking for something in the $80 range for now. Any opinions on this Rosewill?
