Gaming + HD Streaming Rig

Thread Starter

Hello Overclock.net!

Back in mid '09 I built the rig in my sig (with some minor upgrades since). Time for an upgrade! I have done some of my own research but looking for some extra input.

Budget: ~$2,000

What I need: A case and everything inside it except for hard drives. I will be keeping my old rig intact for my fiance to play The Sims. I prefer to do as much through newegg.com as I can. I do not mind paying a little extra, I owe them for replacing a stolen 1500W UPS!

What I have: I have all the peripherals and hard drives. I will be playing on an HD TV at 1920 x 1080 res.

Hardware Goals:

  • Water cooling! I'm ready, but not too ready. Looking at a Corsair H70 or possibly a XSPC Rasa Kit if the maintenance isn't too bad. For sure WC the CPU, and possibly the GPU if I get a kit.
  • Overclocking CPU (I would like to see around 4.5Ghz 24/7)
  • High-end i7. Not sure exactly what will get to desired speeds. I have considered 6-core but I'm thinking it may not be worth it. I really need a good CPU/Mobo combo to crunch on HD video while I game.
  • 8GB of RAM is preferable.
  • I would like to stick with the GTX 570 or 580. Possibly SLI if budget allows.

What I do:
I game as much as I can. I am an MMO guy playing Rift. I also play SC2 but was let down real hard when I tried to stream my games last winter without any success (CPU couldn't hold up). My immediate goal is to play Rift on ultra settings while streaming in HD. I am starting to do some video recording/editing .

Please help, any comments are greatly appreciated!

EDIT:

************* Build so far *************

CPU: I7-2600k Sandy Bridge
CPU Cooling: Corsair Hydro H100 (waiting on release)
Mobo: ASRock Fatal1ty P67 Pro
GPU: EVGA Superclocked GTX 580 Fermi
Memory: 8GB G.Skill Ripjaws 1600 DDR3
PSU: Corsair AX850
Case: Corsair Obsidian Series 800D

Newegg price: roughly $1,700

1 580 should be plenty for 1080p, sticking with 1 card will keep your waterblock costs down if you go that route

Don't get the h70, if you're intimidated by *real* watercooling, wait a few weeks and get the H100. However if I were you I would get the xspc kit.

I would normally recommend just a 2600k for this kind of budget. With all your hd crunching I wonder if you'd be better off with a 970 or 2nd hand 980x

Let's assume you go with the 2600k build:

2600k - $330
ud3 z68 - $145
8gb 1600 CL9 - $95
xspc rx360 kit $200
AX850 psu (in case you want to add a 2nd 580 later) - $180
reference 580 - $450 ish (although they've been as low as $300 open box)
Possibly add in a rs240 or 120 rad - ~$60
580 waterblock - $103
Case - possibly 800D - $270
Tubing of your choice - $25
Couple of barbs for the waterblock $3

Total - $1860

Do you need a soundcard or anything? Blu-ray or dvd drive?

Looking good! No need for a soundcard, I mostly use headphones and stream Pandora through speakers. 1 DvD drive is fine, I only use it for game instillation.

How much maintenance is a XSPC Rasa? I am not too concerned about *real* watercooling. I was happy with my last rig overclocked on air, now that I got extra money I want to make sure I get the most performance out of my chip.

If I go with XSPC Rasa, id probably go for the GTX 580 Hydro Copper 2 what are your thoughts?

Any specific reason for that mobo? I usually like to stay mainstream mobo because I know very little about mobos.

How much harder are the 970's to overclock in comparison to the 2600? I'm thinking I will need the extra CPU's for encoding.

The rasa will be fine, just drain the loop every 6 months, make sure to drain and check for leaks whenever you change components.

personally i think the hydro coppers are overpriced you can get equivalent performance for less with a reference card and aftermarket block, they're also easier to sell afterwards. In fact some of the previous hydro coppers were worse than the aftermarket blocks for temps not sure about the current crop.

The mobo was just a middle of the road gigabyte z68 board that could SLI, there are many other options depending exactly what you need/your favorite brand. There are fancier ones, but this is reasonable.

The 970 won't hit as high frequencies as a 2600k, the 2600k under water will be 4.7-5.0 depending on the chip, the 970 is more likely to be 4.2-4.5 depending on the chip.

Updated the original post with build so far.

Thanks stren for your input so far. I think I may stay clear of XSPC Rasa unless it is far superior to the new H100.

I chose 2600k instead of 970 because 1) I plan on doing more gaming vs HD streaming 2) I feel more comfortable with overclocking and mobo options.

Any concerns with the build so far? I will need to add extra case fans for cooling GPU and a DVD drive... thats about it.
