560 Ti and 6950...both failing me

Thread Starter
I'm running Windows 7 64. E8400 on a Gigabyte P35-DS3R, 4 gigs of Corsair XMS2. Nothing overclocked (I'll get around to it someday). The system is a few years old now, but I figured if I upgraded my old, loyal 8800GT, it would carry me for a while longer.

After some debate, I decided to go with an EVGA GTX560 Ti - I've been happy with Nvidia for a while. The card arrives, and to my sadness, I'm getting crappy framerates, less than 20 fps - not much better (if at all) than what I saw with the 8800. I mess around with drivers and get no result. I run 3D mark and I'm waay below average. Eventually, I decide screw it, I'll send the card back to Amazon, and try a HIS 6950 2 gig (only slightly more expensive).

So that arrives today, driver sweeper, installation, presto, and....also not great framerates. Slightly better, but...again, way low end of the 3D Mark results. P3307 with the 6950, I don't have the numbers for the 560 Ti.

So...something else is happening. CPU bottleneck? I feel like it wouldn't be THIS bad. My current theory is the PSU, but I wanted to ask someone before I bought a new one - my current is the 500W supply that came with my Sonata III, but like the rest of my system, it's a few years old at this point. Could it be that the graphics card(s) aren't getting the power they need?

What game are you playing?

I would say it could possibly be a bottleneck on that E8400

Your PSU, the Antec Earthwatt 500Watts was decent, but it might be a little too close...also, as PSU get older, they degrade....
buy a decent 650 watts PSU...Antec still makes decent ones.
But I would buy SEASONIC, XFX (rebranded Seasonic), Corsair...
I prefer single-rail PSU designs myself, just so you don't risk triggering the OCP of one rail...a single rail alleviates that....

also, your E8400 AT STOCK, is probably really bottlenecking your stuff.

Just buy a decent aftermarket cooler, and OC that CPU to at least 3.6GHz to help out...

Im getting much better rates than you and running just about the same set up. Im quite happy with my step up from a GTX9800( a RMA from EVGA for my original 8800GTS) to my current 560Ti on an 24" 1920x1080.
Im getting 50 avereage in BC2 and 85-90 in Black Ops. Right now I dont have anything OC'ed.
I might try reset BIOS to default setting and reboot. I dunno, good luck with it

EDIT: didnt see the PSU specs, yes that could do it.

OC'ing to 3.6 is easy, ive had mine to 4.2 stable just not 24-7.

E8400 TDP = 65W
GTX 560 Ti TDP = 170W.

235 Watts total. It's fine.

The E8400 is bottlenecking the rest of the system. Overclock time.

Id definitely overclock your 8400, should be able to reach 4 ghz with a decent cooler. also go to usercp and add your system specs, it will help us help you with your problems

Thanks for the help everyone - CPU bottleneck seems to be the consensus. So:

Typing from my laptop (never a good sign). I'm new to overclocking, but I followed the instructions here, and got into Windows ok. But when I tried Realtemp the CPU temp was over 100 degrees. That seems....high. So I reverted to the defaults, and went back into windows, got to the desktop, but Windows crashed almost immediately after. Back to the BIOS, checked CPU health and the CPU temp is STILL over 100 degrees. So - it's late. I'll let it cool down overnight, and tomorrow I'll go out and buy an aftermarket cooler at.....I don't know, Best buy? I always get parts online. Regardless, I'll try again then and report back.

Oh and the game is The Witcher 2. I really would like to play it at an FPS over 20...

The Witcher 2 is extremely taxing. I have a similar setup and probably average 30-40 FPS with high settings and no vsync.

But your PSU is fine and you're getting a CPU bottleneck, just like everyone else has said. I'd research a little before settling on an aftermarket cooler, but the general idea floating around is that the Cooler Master Hyper 212+ is very good for the money if you can find it for less than $30. If they have one in stock at Best Buy, I'd recommend that. Best of luck!
