using a watercooler to..

post #1 of 13

You know those home water coolers? Would you be able to mod one to use as a chiller?

Because the cold tap is already pretty cold so if it's able to continually cool the water so in a WC loop then it would work in my mind. Would it or am I not thinking of something?

one like that ^^^^

I don't think the TEC's in them are capable of cooling a direct constant flow

hmm so there's the cold side of the TEC's blocks are chilling the water and the hot side is being cooled by the refrigerant?

If so then never mind, the TEC's wont be powerful enough

It seems stupid from a production and application standpoint to chill a TEC with a refrigeration unit. Why not just use the refrigerator to cool the liquid?

Seems like the worst that can happen is it just looses effectiveness because you constantly ran water through it. The cooler should be designed to not fry because a bunch of office workers got thirsty and drained it in an hour.

I thought it was already determined months/years ago that a refrigerator cannot cool something that continously produces heat - they'll just burn out and die. Plus i gather condensation would be a problem.

Doubt this would work.

But at the higher flowrate needed to make a water cooling loop effective and with a heat load to overcome I doubt it would last long or cool effectively.
Those things take at least three or four times as long to fill a cup as my pump would so they've got three or four times as long to bring the water temp down, I don't think they'd manage to cool a steady stream of room temperature water much at a decent flowrate, let alone an overclocked CPU.

this will work. Most water chillers do not use tec they are just normal refridgeration loops.You would how ever need to mod it and there would be no temp control. If your going to do it you need to rip it open and take the thermal probe out so it will always run. You will prolly also want to get some sort of active cooling on the passive radiator. Third your not really going to want to use the nozzle you would need to make a resivoir of your own that was insulated to hold the cold. I have one works pretty good but is really only capable of colling like an old dual core ore old video card alone.

I don't know how much these units cost but you could always use those chillers made for marine aquarium use.
