Rec a Receiver + Speaks + Sub - Page 2

If its for music ill get a 2.1 setup. Games he will use the can obviously. Placement, room and seating have a major effect on any speaker. Op how big is the room?

Here's a 5.1 speaker setup with a receiver.

That's about how much they cost, a receiver of this quality should last you years.

HTIB is probably not what he's looking for. If you read his post you'll see he wants a 2.1 setup and reading between the lines it looks as if music will be the focus. Gorb made a great suggestion with the Ascend Acoustic speakers and Outlaw sub - I would defintely give the OK to that setup.

I know you stated that you want a receiver, but I just wanted to make you aware that you don't need a receiver to get 2.1 from your STX.

I am using active speakers with an amped sub:
Source: Asus Xonar Essence STX.
Speakers: M-Audio AV 40 studio monitors.
Subwoofer: Polk PSW10 10" sub.

I got Y splitters for the RCA outs on the STX. I set the crossover on the sub to 100Hz so it doesn't pick up anything in the higher ranges.

I've attached a picture of how I set it up. Credit for the idea goes to AMC, who thought it up. His post in my thread is here:

Good luck.

Here are some other good speakers I forgot to mention. I haven't listened to them personally but based on the comments in this thread they're definitely worth checking out. I plan on picking up a pair sometime soon.

Thread Starter
Great responses, thus far. Thanks guys.

Room is big enough to fit the largest ikea galant and a couch behind it. Not too big which is why im sticking with 2.1. I am moving soon but I am perfectly content with a 2.1 set-up.

I thought of going the active route and cut out a receiver altogether but I'd like to pick up a receiver while I've got a source of income (intern) before I go back to grad school.

If I can get away with a used receiver like gorb mentioned, I will definitely do it so I can pour my budget into the monitors and sub. I dont necessarily need "loud" speakers as opposed to accurate speakers. I dont need to blow my ears out, quality over quantity.

then he should get a stereo receiver. 2.1 on a multichannel receiver? What a waste.

Op you can look at the Yamaha Ns-333 Bookshelve Speakers.
Harman Cardon HK 3390 rECEIVER
^This will set you back around $500.

He also stated that he'll be moving soon. It wouldn't hurt anything to future proof his options a little if he ever wanted to use it for surround.

Where are you located? Carpeted floors or hardwood?

I run a 5.1 setup downstairs with Pioneer and Polk components (with Klipsh rears), and I'm pretty pleased with it.

Why are you quoting me then. I suggested a 5.1 setup one complained he wants 2.1 now other one complains hes moving and surround is future proof. Make up your mind woman lol

You can add the Velodyne Impact 10 sub to that ^ones over there and you got yourself a nice 2.1 setup. And yes the sub got his own crosover selector you can fine tune it. You can set the cross nicely to match the speakers. Btw those Yamaha Bookshelves came 2nd to only the Behringer B2030P
