Supa-Ole' Carwash Register... Upgrades?

My dad's friend hired me on as the new cashier at his carwash, and considering here in Florida it's becoming the down-time (summer) and current economic situation, I wanted to thank him someway for helping me out by giving me the job. He is using a really old cash register, and so I figured I could help him update his system and make it easier and simpler to process transactions.

His register is from this era... but considerably less "full-featured"

A pretty cool place I found during some research was http://www.autopilotcontrols.com/profitpilot.html but as you can see it's pretty pricey at $2,499 and a monthly $199 fee. (affordable my ass...)

I'm not entirely sure how to do this, but obviously he will need some POS software (hopefully free! The main reason he hasn't already upgraded is from the cost these systems usually come at.) I'm hoping to really only need to get him to purchase the hardware, then I could build the computers and install the networking cables.

Any people with experience with this kind of thing have any tips/ideas for me? My dream setup for him would be having a touchscreen monitor outside where the customers could click what they want, and that would be networked with the computer at the register area. Then all they need to do is come in, get anything else they need/want in the store area, then give me their cash or card and be good to go.

Of course, anything to help would be great, that is just the best thing I could think of being possible for it.

Thoughts?
